Recycling in Salt Lake City, Utah
Salt Lake City runs curbside recycling through its blue cart, picked up every other week under the Sustainability Department (SLCgreen). The single most important local rule: glass does NOT go in the blue cart. Glass is handled separately through Momentum Recycling, either as a paid curbside subscription or free resident drop-off bins. Bigger items, hazardous waste, and dumping run through Salt Lake County at the Salt Lake Valley Landfill on California Avenue.
Frequently Asked Questions
What goes in the Salt Lake City blue recycling cart?
The blue cart takes cardboard and paper (newspaper, junk mail, office paper, magazines, phone books, paper tubes), plastic containers like milk jugs, bottles, cups, and yogurt tubs, aluminum cans, steel food cans, and drained aerosol cans. As of late 2025 the city also accepts paper coffee cups and plastic polypropylene soda cups. Rinse food and liquid out first, and never bag your recyclables in plastic garbage bags.
Can I put glass in my blue recycling cart in Salt Lake City?
No. Glass is not accepted in the blue curbside cart. Salt Lake City contracts with Momentum Recycling for glass. You can sign up for optional curbside glass collection (a 35-gallon can, billed on your city water bill at $8.49 per month as of September 2025) or take bottles and jars to a free Momentum drop-off bin. Only empty glass bottles and jars are accepted, with lids and corks removed. No ceramics, Pyrex, windows, mirrors, light bulbs, or drinking glasses.
Where do I take household hazardous waste and electronics in Salt Lake City?
Salt Lake County runs Household Hazardous Waste collection, and disposal of normal household amounts is free for county residents. Drop-off is at the Salt Lake Valley Landfill (6030 W. California Ave.) and the collection center in Sandy, both open Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. They take paint, fuels, pesticides, cleaning chemicals, batteries, automotive fluids, aerosols, and fluorescent bulbs. Note: the county HHW centers are not currently accepting electronics, so for TVs, computers, and phones they point residents to retailer take-back (such as Best Buy) or manufacturer mail-in programs.
How do I get rid of large or bulky items in Salt Lake City?
Use the city's Call 2 Haul program. If you have residential curbside garbage service, you get two scheduled at-home bulk pickups per year: one for bulk waste and one for green waste. Call 2 Haul collects furniture, mattresses, appliances, refrigerators, tires, electronic waste, and bulky yard waste. Some items are not accepted, so check the city's not-accepted list before you set anything out.
Is there a bottle deposit or free dump day in Salt Lake City?
Utah has no bottle or can deposit (no five-cent return), so recycling cans and bottles happens through the blue cart, not a redemption center. For dumping, the Salt Lake Valley Landfill on California Avenue charges by weight or load, and cash or card customers without an account need a valid Salt Lake County ID or vehicle registration at the scales. Household hazardous waste itself is free for county residents.
Salt Lake City Recycling Tips
- •Keep glass out of the blue cart. It contaminates the load. Either subscribe to Momentum curbside glass (added to your water bill) or drop bottles and jars at a free Momentum bin.
- •Never bag your recyclables. Loose items go in the blue cart directly. Plastic bags, films, and wraps are not accepted and should go back to a grocery store bag-return.
- •Blue cart pickup is every other week, so learn your route's recycling week (the city reoptimized collection days in 2025) and set the cart out the night before.
- •Save two Call 2 Haul pickups a year for the big stuff: mattresses, appliances, tires, and e-waste get collected from your home if you have curbside garbage service.
- •During winter inversions, when cold air traps pollution in the valley, cut back on driving to the landfill and skip wood burning. Combine trips and use drop-off bins close to home.
