How to Recycle Yard Waste

Leaves, grass clippings, small branches, and garden trimmings. Americans generate about 35 million tons of yard trimmings a year; roughly two-thirds are composted or mulched (EPA 2018). Compost or green-waste programs, not curbside recycling carts.

Leaves
Fallen leaves and leaf litter. Best used as mulch, shredded into the lawn, home-composted as carbon-rich browns, or collected through municipal leaf and yard-waste programs.

Grass Clippings
Fresh lawn clippings. Prefer leaving them on the turf (grasscycling); otherwise compost as nitrogen-rich greens or set them out with municipal yard waste.

Tree Branches
Prunings, brush, and small limbs. Chip on site, bundle to local size limits for curbside yard waste, or use a municipal brush drop-off that turns wood into mulch.

Yard Waste FAQ

Can I put pet waste in yard waste bins?

Generally NO. Pet waste contains pathogens that normal municipal composting piles may not kill. It should be bagged and trashed unless your city explicitly states otherwise.

Do I need to bag my leaves?

It depends on your city. Some use vacuum trucks for loose leaves; others require paper yard bags or rigid barrels. Never use plastic bags for yard waste as they contaminate the compost.
