Recycling in Houston, Texas

Houston recycling runs through the city Solid Waste Management Department, which issues a green-lid curbside cart for single-stream recycling. The city also operates six Neighborhood Depositories (Residential Drop-Off Centers), two Environmental Service Centers for household hazardous waste and electronics, and the Westpark Consumer Recycling Center. Bulky junk and yard debris are handled on a heavy trash cycle that runs every other month, alternating between tree waste and junk waste. Texas has no bottle deposit, so cans and bottles carry no refund value here. Government-issued ID required for regulated metals including copper and catalytic converters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I put in my green recycling cart in Houston?

The city green cart takes paper (newspaper, magazines, junk mail, office paper), flattened cardboard, plastic containers numbered 1 through 5 and 7 (rinsed), aluminum and bimetal cans, glass bottles and jars, and gable-top and shelf-stable cartons. Keep out plastic bags and film, shrink wrap, greasy or soiled paper, and large plastic items like toys, hoses, and buckets. Rinse and drain containers, and set the cart out between 6:00 p.m. the night before and 7:00 a.m. on your collection day.

Is glass accepted in Houston curbside recycling?

Yes. The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department lists glass bottles, jugs, and jars as accepted in the green curbside cart. Glass is also accepted at the six Neighborhood Depositories (Residential Drop-Off Centers) if you would rather drop it off. If your household or apartment uses a private hauler instead of city service, check with that provider, because many private and regional programs do not take curbside glass.

How does Houston heavy trash work for junk waste and tree waste?

Heavy trash is collected every other month for addresses on city curbside service, up to six collections per year. It alternates: tree waste is picked up in odd-numbered months (January, March, May, and so on) and junk waste in even-numbered months (February, April, June, and so on). Tree waste means clean limbs, branches, and stumps (pieces up to 8 inches in diameter or 10 feet long). Junk waste covers furniture, mattresses, carpet, appliances, and up to a small amount of resident-generated building material. Set items behind the curb between 6:00 p.m. the Friday before and 7:00 a.m. on your day.

Where do I take household hazardous waste, paint, and electronics in Houston?

Take those items to a city Environmental Service Center, such as the one at 11500 S. Post Oak Rd. The centers accept electronic scrap, household chemicals, latex and oil-based paint (up to 25 gallons), paint thinners and stains, pool chemicals, mercury thermostats, antifreeze, fluorescent bulbs, motor oil, and up to five passenger tires per month. Never set hazardous waste or electronics out for heavy trash pickup. Proof of a matching Houston address is required.

Do you get money back for cans and bottles in Houston?

No. Texas is not a bottle-deposit (bottle-bill) state, so there is no per-container refund on cans or bottles anywhere in Houston. You recycle them through your green cart or a drop-off center rather than redeeming them for cash. If you want money for metal, scrap yards pay by weight for aluminum, copper, and steel, and Texas law requires them to record your ID and details of the sale.

Houston Recycling Tips

  • •Use the city HTX Collects app or the online service lookup to find your exact garbage, recycling, and heavy trash days, since routes and schedules vary by address.
  • •Glass, tree waste, junk waste, and up to five passenger tires can go to any of the six Neighborhood Depositories (for example North at 9003 N Main, or Southwest at 10785 SW Freeway); residents may visit up to four times a month and must show a matching Texas ID and proof of address.
  • •Remember the odd/even rule: tree waste in odd-numbered months, junk waste in even-numbered months. Mixing the two in one pile can get the whole pile skipped.
  • •Refrigerators and freezers are only collected if a certified technician has removed the refrigerant and tagged the unit; contractor-generated construction debris is never picked up and must be hauled by the contractor.
  • •Selling scrap metal in Texas requires a government-issued photo ID, and the recycler must log the transaction under state law (Occupations Code Chapter 1956); catalytic converter sales also require a thumbprint and extra paperwork.
