Recycling in Columbus, Ohio

Columbus runs curbside recycling through the city Division of Refuse Collection, and since June 2023 it has been collected weekly rather than every other week. Recyclables go loose in a 64-gallon blue cart with no sorting required, and glass bottles and jars in all colors are accepted, which is not true in every Ohio city. County-wide programs are run by the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO), which operates the Franklin County Sanitary Landfill and a network of recycling drop-off sites. Ohio has no bottle deposit law, so there is no cash refund for returning cans and bottles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Columbus curbside recycling take glass?

Yes. The city accepts glass bottles and jars in all colors in the blue cart, along with paper and flattened cardboard, plastic bottles, jugs, tubs and cups, metal cans, and cartons. No sorting is needed. Keep out plastic bags and film, foam, batteries, and tanglers like hoses, wires and clothing.

How often is recycling collected in Columbus?

Weekly. Columbus switched from every-other-week to weekly residential recycling the week of June 12, 2023. You can look up your collection day through the PickUp CBUS app or by calling 311 at (614) 645-3111.

Where can I drop off household hazardous waste in Columbus?

SWACO runs a permanent Household Hazardous Waste facility at 645 E. 8th Avenue, Columbus 43201, free to Franklin County residents. It is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. SWACO also holds free mobile HHW collection events around central Ohio. Take paint, solvents, lawn and pool chemicals, and cleaners there rather than putting them in the trash.

How do I get rid of a mattress or old furniture in Columbus?

Schedule a free bulk pickup with the city by calling 311 at (614) 645-3111 or using 311.columbus.gov. The city collects furniture, mattresses, carpet, and non-refrigerant appliances like dishwashers and washing machines. It does not take tires, auto parts, building materials, refrigerated appliances (fridges, freezers, AC units), furnaces, pianos, or hot tubs, which need a private hauler.

Where can I recycle electronics in Columbus?

Electronics are not accepted in the blue cart. Drop them at a City of Columbus Waste and Reuse Convenience Center, which take electronics along with clothing, furniture, yard waste and used cooking oil free to residents. You can also use SWACO's Recycle Right search tool to find an electronics or appliance drop-off near you.

Columbus Recycling Tips

  • •Put recyclables in the blue cart loose and unbagged. Plastic bags jam the sorting equipment and are not accepted, so drop those at a store film-drop bin instead.
  • •Glass is welcome in Columbus curbside, so bottles and jars of any color can go straight in the cart. Just skip anything that is not rinsed.
  • •For yard waste, use biodegradable paper bags or a rigid container marked yard waste, and keep tied branch bundles no larger than four feet long and two feet wide.
  • •Bulk pickup will not happen unless you schedule it first through 311. Set items out only on your assigned collection day and leave furniture assembled.
  • •The Franklin County Sanitary Landfill in Grove City does not take yard waste, liquids, or anything hazardous, so route those to SWACO composting or the HHW facility instead.
