Recycling in Boise, Idaho

Boise runs curbside collection under the city's Curb It program, with Republic Services as the hauler. Glass is the big thing to know: it does not go in the blue recycle cart. Residents either sign up for a separate glass-only cart collected every four weeks or drop glass for free at collection sites around town. The city also runs a weekly green compost cart and the Hefty ReNew orange bag program for the hard-to-recycle plastics the blue cart won't take.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you put glass in the Boise recycle cart?

No. Glass is not accepted in the blue Curb It recycle cart. Boise handles glass separately: you can subscribe to a glass-only cart (a 65-gallon cart collected every four weeks for a monthly fee) or drop glass off for free at glass collection sites located throughout the city, open seven days a week. Only empty bottles, jars, and Pyrex are accepted. Mirrors, windows, dishes, light bulbs, and ceramics are not.

What goes in the Boise blue recycle cart?

The blue Curb It cart takes broken-down cardboard, paper (newspaper, magazines, mail), metal food and beverage cans (aluminum and steel), and plastic bottles, jars, and jugs. Glass stays out (separate program), and #4 through #7 plastics go in a Hefty ReNew orange bag placed inside the blue cart rather than loose.

How does the Hefty ReNew orange bag program work in Boise?

Hefty ReNew (formerly the Hefty EnergyBag program) is a voluntary way to recycle plastics the blue cart won't take loose, such as #4 through #7 plastics. You buy the orange bags, fill them with accepted hard-to-recycle plastics, tie them off, and place the full bags inside your blue recycle cart. The truck picks them up on normal recycling day and they go to a local facility.

Where do I take household hazardous waste and electronics in Boise?

Boise runs free Household Hazardous Waste mobile collection sites for residents (open 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. at least one day a month), and there is a HHW facility at the Ada County Landfill open to residents Fridays and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., at no cost. Electronics and TVs (e-waste) are accepted at the HHW sites and at the Ada County Landfill Recovery and Diversion Area.

Does Boise have curbside composting?

Yes. The Curb It compost program provides a green cart collected once a week, year round, for food scraps and yard trimmings. Overflow yard debris can go in paper leaf bags (up to 10 per week). Finished compost is given back to participating Boise households. If you don't have a compost cart, the city also runs a free Food Scrap Drop Off program at neighborhood sites.

Boise Recycling Tips

  • •Keep glass out of the blue recycle cart. Sign up for the separate glass cart or use a free glass drop-off site, and rinse containers and remove lids and caps first.
  • •Use Hefty ReNew orange bags for #4 to #7 plastics, tie them tightly, and drop the full bag inside your blue cart so those plastics don't just get landfilled loose.
  • •For appliances, workout equipment, grills, and other mostly-metal items, the Ada County Landfill Recovery and Diversion Area takes scrap metal (a $25 fee applies to refrigerated appliances).
  • •Big cleanout of paint, chemicals, or batteries? Small loads (about 25 items) go to a HHW mobile site; larger loads go to the HHW facility at the Ada County Landfill on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • •Idaho has no bottle or can deposit, so there's no refund for returning containers. Rinse and recycle cans and #1 and #2 bottles curbside instead.
