- 1Empty completely and rinse to remove all residue
- 2Replace caps (they're often recyclable with the container)
- 3Remove any pump dispensers, spray nozzles, or trigger mechanisms
- 4Remove outer labels only if they peel off easily
- 5Check bottom for recycling symbol (#2 HDPE)
- 6Ensure containers are completely dry before recycling
- Curbside recycling
- Recycling centers
- Grocery store collection areas
Contamination Prevention: Thoroughly rinse containers that held soap, detergent, or other cleaning products. Even small amounts of residue can affect recycling quality.
Highly recyclable into new containers, plastic lumber, playground equipment, and park benches. HDPE can be recycled 7-9 times before quality degrades. Recycling HDPE uses 88% less energy than producing virgin HDPE plastic. One recycled milk jug provides enough recycled plastic to make a new detergent bottle.

Should I remove the cap from HDPE containers?
Most recycling programs now accept caps ON the container, as both the bottle and cap are typically made from recyclable materials. Check your local guidelines to be sure.
Can I recycle HDPE containers that held motor oil?
Yes, but only automotive motor oil containers. Drain completely, replace the cap, and ensure no oil residue remains. Industrial or non-automotive oil containers should not be recycled.
What's the difference between natural and colored HDPE?
Natural (clear/white) HDPE has higher recycling value than colored HDPE because it can be recycled into a wider variety of products. Both are recyclable, but natural HDPE is preferred.
Why are pump dispensers not recyclable with HDPE containers?
Pump mechanisms contain metal springs and multiple plastic types that can't be separated easily during recycling. Remove pumps and recycle the container separately.
