How to Recycle EV Battery Modules
Battery modules are intermediate assemblies inside an EV or hybrid traction pack: groups of cells with structural framing and often cooling interfaces. They still hold high energy density and are regulated as lithium batteries when shipped. Public recycling paths run through the whole-pack dealer or dismantler stream, not retail battery bins.
Quick answer
Modules are mid-pack assemblies of cells and structure. They are not a consumer drop-off category. They reach recyclers only when a dealer or licensed dismantler tears down a traction pack. Do not pull modules from a wreck for scrap copper or DIY energy storage.
- Recyclable
- Yes
- Typical value
- Not a typical consumer scrap payout. Shops may account for modules inside pack logistics. Ask the handler; do not expect a fixed per-module consumer price.
- Donate / take-back
- Available
- 1Do not remove modules from a vehicle or pack yourself
- 2Arrange pack handling through a dealer, OEM service, or licensed dismantler
- 3If you already have a module from a shop teardown, leave it sealed and contact that shop or an industrial EV-battery recycler for pickup instructions
- 4Do not tape, discharge, test, or package modules for consumer parcel shipping
- 5Keep damaged or swollen modules isolated outdoors away from structures until a pro collects them
- EV dealers and OEM service centers handling pack teardown
- Licensed auto dismantlers routing modules with packs to industrial recyclers
- Industrial battery recyclers (Redwood Materials, Cirba-class processors) via B2B logistics
- Not Home Depot, Call2Recycle, or Battery Network consumer bins
Module-level shipping is still DOT hazardous-materials regulated (often UN 3480). Modules are not safer than packs for amateurs. Selling used modules for DIY home storage without professional testing and certification is a fire and liability risk.
When pros dismantle packs, modules feed industrial Li-ion recycling (black mass and metal recovery) or, less often, screened second-life programs. Leaving modules in scrap piles or trash creates short and fire hazards.
- Keep the pack intact and let the dealer or dismantler decide recycle vs second-life screening
- Ask the OEM about module-level repair or remanufacture under warranty before EOL recycling
Accepted
- OEM EV and PHEV modules removed during professional pack service or salvage
- Hybrid pack modules routed with the vehicle battery stream
- Intact modules accepted by industrial recyclers from licensed shops
Not Accepted
- Modules pulled for Craigslist DIY energy-storage projects
- Portable-battery retail drop-off bins
- Trash or curbside recycling
- Damaged modules offered to scrap yards without DDR/hazmat handling
Estimated value: Not a typical consumer scrap payout. Shops may account for modules inside pack logistics. Ask the handler; do not expect a fixed per-module consumer price.
- Lithium-ion cells at module voltage
- Exposed busbars and connectors if opened
- Flammable electrolyte
- Cooling interfaces that may retain fluid
What is an EV battery module?
A module groups many cells into a replaceable assembly inside the pack. Packs stack modules; cells sit inside modules. Consumers deal with the whole vehicle or pack, not loose modules.
Can I sell modules from a wrecked EV?
Untrained removal is unsafe and often illegal under hazmat rules. Licensed dismantlers remove packs per OEM emergency response guides and ship to industrial recyclers. Do not harvest modules for resale yourself.
Are modules safer to ship than full packs?
No. Modules are still lithium batteries under DOT rules. Consumers should not self-ship automotive modules.
Can modules go into home battery banks?
Professional second-life programs exist for tested modules. Building a DIY home bank from wrecked EV modules is not a recommended recycling path and creates serious fire risk.
