Recycling in Miami, Florida

Miami runs on two systems: the City of Miami handles curbside garbage and recycling for city residents, while Miami-Dade County runs the drop-off centers, hazardous waste events, and the region's disposal facilities. The City of Miami blue recycling cart is single-stream and, unlike many Florida cities, it still takes glass bottles. Since a February 2023 fire closed the county's Doral waste-to-energy plant, more of the area's trash has been redirected to other county sites, so keeping recyclables and hazardous items out of the regular bin matters more than ever. Florida has no bottle deposit, so there is no cash-back on cans or bottles here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I put in my City of Miami recycling cart?

The City of Miami cart accepts paper, flattened cardboard and boxes, steel and aluminum food and beverage cans (aluminum bottles too), poly-coated cartons like juice and milk boxes, plastic bottles and jugs, plastic tubs, and glass bottles. Flatten boxes and empty and rinse containers before tossing them in.

Does Miami recycling take glass?

Yes. The City of Miami curbside cart accepts glass bottles, which is not the case in every Florida city. It does not take other glass such as window or auto glass, mirrors, drinking glasses, ceramics, glass cookware, or light bulbs, so keep those out of the cart.

What is NOT accepted in Miami curbside recycling?

Keep out plastic bags, Styrofoam cups, plates and food containers, straws, plastic silverware, and meat trays. Also excluded: food and household garbage, home chemicals and paint, batteries (lithium batteries can start fires), light bulbs, window and auto glass, mirrors, ceramics, coat hangers, pots and pans, small appliances, yard waste, and bulky trash.

Where can I drop off trash and bulky items in Miami-Dade County?

Miami-Dade County operates 13 Neighborhood Trash and Recycling Centers, open daily from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. You can drop off household trash, tree and yard cuttings, and up to three cubic yards of construction and demolition debris per day. Most centers also take up to four automobile tires and white goods like old stoves, refrigerators, and washers. These centers serve unincorporated Miami-Dade and certain cities, so confirm your address is eligible before you go.

How do I dispose of paint, chemicals, and electronics in Miami?

Miami-Dade County holds free Home Chemical Drop-Off mobile events and runs permanent Home Chemical Collection Centers for residents. They accept household hazardous waste and electronics such as oil-based paints, still-liquid latex paint, garden chemicals, fluorescent bulbs, computer monitors, televisions, printers, and audio and video equipment. A valid Florida ID is required, and business or government waste is not accepted.

Miami Recycling Tips

  • •Flatten all cardboard boxes before putting them in your City of Miami cart, and never bag your recyclables: plastic bags jam the sorting machines and are not accepted.
  • •Glass bottles go in the City of Miami curbside cart, but drinking glasses, mirrors, ceramics, and light bulbs do not, so sort them out first.
  • •Never put batteries in the recycling cart. Lithium batteries can catch fire when crushed at the sorting facility; take them to an approved drop-off location instead.
  • •For large items, Miami-Dade residents get two bulky waste pickups per calendar year of up to 25 cubic yards each, and you must schedule the appointment before placing the pile at the curb (no more than three days ahead).
  • •Scrap metal, old appliances, and up to four tires can go to one of the 13 county Trash and Recycling Centers, but scrapyards will often pay cash for clean metal, and remember Florida has no bottle-deposit refund on cans or bottles.
