How to Recycle Wood Ash

Ash from burning untreated wood in fireplaces or wood stoves.

RecyclableUpdated Jul 2026

Quick answer

Use it sparingly. Cold ash from plain, untreated firewood adds potassium and lime to compost or garden soil. Let it cool completely first, and never use ash from treated or painted wood or from charcoal briquettes; briquette ash, especially from lighter-fluid-treated briquettes, can carry additives that plain fireplace ash doesn't.

Recyclable
Yes
How to Prepare
  • 1Let ash cool completely, at least 72 hours, before handling
  • 2Store it in a covered metal container until ready to use
  • 3Sprinkle it thinly and mix it into soil or compost rather than dumping it in one spot
  • 4Use only ash from plain, untreated firewood, never charcoal briquettes or treated lumber
  • 5Test soil pH before regular use, since wood ash raises pH and too much can make soil overly alkaline
Where to Recycle
  • Home gardens
  • Composting facilities
  • Agricultural use
Special Instructions

Wood ash works as a liming agent, per UNH Extension, adding potassium, calcium, and phosphorus and raising soil pH. That only holds for ash from clean, untreated wood: UNH Extension warns that ash from garbage, or pressure-treated or painted wood, can carry heavy metals toxic to plants. Charcoal briquette ash is a separate case people often lump in with fireplace ash. Briquettes, especially instant-light ones treated with lighter fluid, can leave additives in the ash that aren't meant for a food garden, so don't treat briquette ash the same as ash from a wood stove.

Environmental Impact

Used sparingly, wood ash recycles the potassium, calcium, and phosphorus in the wood back into soil and reduces the need for lime or synthetic fertilizer.

Bar chart of how long common trash takes to break down: plastic bottle 450 years, aluminum can 200 years, glass bottle over 1 million years. Shows why recycling wood ash matters.
Why it matters: in a landfill, wood ash and other waste can persist for centuries. Estimated decomposition time by item.
