How to Recycle Stainless Steel

Stainless steel appliances, sinks, cookware, and fixtures. A magnet is the grade-sorting tool here, not a universal test - 304 and 316 (the common consumer grades) are non-magnetic, while 430 and other 400-series stainless are magnetic.

RecyclableSS304 stainless (non-magnetic, the most common grade) runs about $0.30-$0.38/lb; 316 (also non-magnetic, contains molybdenum for better corrosion resistance) pays close to double, around $0.70-$0.75/lb; mixed or unsorted stainless prices lower, around $0.20-$0.28/lb (August 2026 scrap-yard boards).Updated Jul 2026

Quick answer

Yes, stainless steel is 100% recyclable, and its magnetism depends on the grade, not the material. Common 300-series stainless (304, 316 - sinks, appliances, water bottles) is non-magnetic; cheaper 400-series stainless (430, 410 - some trim and cutlery) sticks to a magnet like regular steel. Keep it separate from carbon steel and take it to a scrap yard: 304 pays roughly $0.30-$0.38/lb and 316 (it contains molybdenum) close to double that, around $0.75/lb, as of August 2026.

How to Prepare
  • 1Remove any plastic or rubber components
  • 2Clean thoroughly
  • 3Remove electronic components from appliances
  • 4Test with a magnet: non-magnetic pieces are usually 304/316 (higher value); magnetic pieces are 400-series and price closer to plain steel
  • 5Keep it separate from carbon/mild steel

Environmental Impact

Stainless steel contains valuable nickel, chromium, and sometimes molybdenum, which gives it higher recycling value than plain steel.

Bar chart of energy saved by recycling versus making new from raw materials: aluminum 95%, copper 85%, plastic and steel 70%, paper 40%, glass 30%. Relevant to recycling stainless steel.
Recycling stainless steel keeps material in use and skips energy-hungry raw production. Energy saved vs. virgin manufacturing, by material.

FAQs

Is stainless steel magnetic?

It depends on the grade. 304 and 316 - the grades in most sinks, appliances, and cookware - are non-magnetic in their normal state. 430 and other 400-series stainless (common in cheaper trim and some cutlery) are magnetic, just like plain steel. Heavy cold-working (bending, hammering, machining) can make 304/316 weakly magnetic at the worked spot, but that's the exception, not the rule.

How do I know if I have 304 or 316?

Yards typically test with an XRF analyzer or a spark test since the grades look identical. As a homeowner, check for a stamped grade number on appliances or fixtures, or sell it as general stainless and let the yard grade it - 316 shows up far less often in household items than 304.

Why does 316 pay more than 304?

316 contains molybdenum, which adds corrosion resistance (it's the grade used in marine hardware and some medical equipment) and costs more to produce. Scrap yards pass that through - Rockaway Recycling priced 316 at close to double 304 in August 2026.
