How to Recycle Smoke Detectors
Ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms, including sealed ten-year lithium units. The disposal answer is more permissive than the internet suggests, and the reason is regulatory rather than reassuring hand-waving.
Quick answer
Contrary to what most guidance says, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission permits household ionization detectors to be thrown away as ordinary trash, because they are distributed under a specific exemption and hold no more than 1 microcurie of americium-241. Many people prefer not to, and household hazardous waste will take them. Take the battery out first and recycle it separately. Never take the unit apart.

The regulatory position is worth stating precisely because so much published advice gets it wrong. Consumer ionization smoke alarms are distributed under an exemption at 10 CFR 30.15(a)(7), which caps them at not more than 1 microcurie of americium-241, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's own guidance is that units distributed under that exemption may be disposed of as ordinary trash. First Alert says the same about its products. That does not oblige you to bin one, and plenty of counties would rather you did not, so household hazardous waste remains a reasonable choice and is the right one where local rules require it. What is not reasonable is disassembly: the source is sealed inside a chamber and should stay there. Manufacturer mail-back exists but is narrower than blogs imply, being limited to a company's own brands, typically charging a fee, excluding postage, and often requiring a phone call to arrange. Photoelectric alarms contain no radioactive source and are handled as ordinary electronics.
The americium in a single alarm is a sealed, tiny quantity, which is the basis for the exemption, and the realistic environmental question is the electronics and the battery rather than the radioactivity. Batteries are the part that genuinely should not go in the trash, and lithium cells in sealed ten-year units are a fire risk in collection trucks and compactors, which is the practical reason to take those to a collection site whole. Replacing alarms on schedule matters more than any of this: a working detector is the point of the product.

Are smoke detectors radioactive?

The battery cannot be removed by design, so the whole unit goes together. Because it contains a lithium cell, an e-waste or HHW route is the better choice than the bin, since lithium batteries are a fire risk in waste trucks.
How often should smoke alarms be replaced?
Manufacturers generally specify ten years from the date of manufacture, which is printed on the back. Sensors degrade whether or not the alarm has ever sounded, so an old unit that still chirps on test is not necessarily still reliable.
