How to Recycle Adhesives/Glues
Water-based school and wood glues, solvent-based contact and construction adhesives, cyanoacrylate, and two-part epoxy. The split between them decides the disposal route.
Quick answer
School glue and white wood glue are not hazardous and can dry out and go in the bin. Super glue, model and rubber cement, contact adhesive, construction adhesive, and epoxy resins are household hazardous waste while liquid. Cured epoxy is an inert solid and bins normally, but mix only small batches, because a curing pot gets hot enough to ignite what is around it.

King County's guidance draws the line clearly: super glue, instant adhesives, rubber cement, and model cement go to household hazardous waste, while non-toxic glues of the kind used in classrooms can go in the garbage. Epoxy has its own rule worth knowing, and it comes from the manufacturer rather than a regulator. WEST SYSTEM states that fully cured epoxy is a non-hazardous solid, that liquid resin and hardener should never be binned, and that you should cure only small batches for disposal because pots of curing epoxy can get hot enough to ignite surrounding combustible materials. That is a genuine fire risk from an ordinary DIY material, and it catches people who try to harden a large leftover quantity all at once. A container counts as empty for disposal purposes at roughly 3 percent residue by weight or less.
Solvent-based adhesives contribute volatile organic compounds and contaminate soil and water if poured out, while cured adhesives are inert and unremarkable. The practical consequence is that most of the harm from this category comes from the small fraction of products that are liquid and solvent-borne, and from buying larger quantities than a job needs. Water-based glues, which cover most household use, are the least problematic material in this whole category.
