How to Recycle Adhesives/Glues
Water-based school and wood glues, solvent-based contact and construction adhesives, cyanoacrylate, and two-part epoxy. The split between them decides the disposal route.
Quick answer
School glue and white wood glue are not hazardous and can dry out and go in the bin. Super glue, model and rubber cement, contact adhesive, construction adhesive, and epoxy resins are household hazardous waste while liquid. Cured epoxy is an inert solid and bins normally, but mix only small batches, because a curing pot gets hot enough to ignite what is around it. Before you go, confirm that a local recycling center accepts the material in its current condition.

How to Prepare
- 1Sort by type first, since water-based and solvent-based go to completely different places
- 2Let water-based white, school, and wood glue dry out solid, then bin it
- 3Keep solvent-based adhesives, super glue, and uncured epoxy components in their original containers for household hazardous waste
- 4Never pour any adhesive down a drain
- 5Mix epoxy in small batches only, since a large curing mass generates enough heat to be a fire risk
- 6Cure leftover epoxy fully, in a small quantity and somewhere non-combustible, before treating it as a solid
- 7Bin genuinely empty tubes and cartridges, meaning no more than a trace of residue
- 8Work with ventilation, since solvent adhesives give off flammable and irritating vapors
Where to Recycle
- Household hazardous waste facilities, for solvent adhesives and uncured epoxy
- Municipal collection events
- Regular trash, for dried water-based glue, cured epoxy, and empty tubes
Special Instructions
King County's guidance draws the line clearly: super glue, instant adhesives, rubber cement, and model cement go to household hazardous waste, while non-toxic glues of the kind used in classrooms can go in the garbage. Epoxy has its own rule worth knowing, and it comes from the manufacturer rather than a regulator. WEST SYSTEM states that fully cured epoxy is a non-hazardous solid, that liquid resin and hardener should never be binned, and that you should cure only small batches for disposal because pots of curing epoxy can get hot enough to ignite surrounding combustible materials. That is a genuine fire risk from an ordinary DIY material, and it catches people who try to harden a large leftover quantity all at once. A container counts as empty for disposal purposes at roughly 3 percent residue by weight or less.
Environmental Impact
Solvent-based adhesives contribute volatile organic compounds and contaminate soil and water if poured out, while cured adhesives are inert and unremarkable. The practical consequence is that most of the harm from this category comes from the small fraction of products that are liquid and solvent-borne, and from buying larger quantities than a job needs. Water-based glues, which cover most household use, are the least problematic material in this whole category.
Official guidance and resources
Accepted items and drop-off rules can vary by location. Check the destination before you go.
What’s Accepted
Not Accepted
- Liquid resin or hardener in the trash
- Solvent-based adhesives poured down a drain or onto the ground
- Large batches of epoxy cured at once, which is a fire risk rather than a disposal method
- Partly full cartridges in curbside recycling
Hazardous Components
- Toluene, acetone, and other solvents in contact and model cements
- Epoxy resins and amine hardeners, which are skin sensitizers before curing
- Cyanoacrylate, which bonds skin instantly and reacts exothermically with cotton
- Isocyanates in some polyurethane construction adhesives
