Recycling in San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio runs curbside collection through the city Solid Waste Management Department using a three-cart system: a blue cart for recycling, a green cart for organics, and a brown cart for trash. The blue recycling cart does accept glass bottles and jars (with the lids removed and placed in the brown trash cart), which sets San Antonio apart from many cities that have dropped curbside glass. As of August 1, 2024, plastic bags are no longer accepted in the blue cart at all, even bundled. Bulky and brush items are collected curbside twice a year, and residents can also self-haul to city drop-off centers. Government-issued ID required for regulated metals including copper and catalytic converters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does San Antonio recycle glass in the blue cart?

Yes. The San Antonio blue recycling cart accepts glass beverage bottles and food jars, but you must remove the lids first and put them in the brown trash cart. Everything goes in the cart loose, never in bags.

What can I NOT put in my San Antonio blue recycling cart?

No plastic bags (banned from the cart since August 1, 2024, including bundled bags and plastic film), no hard plastic, no shredded paper, no napkins or paper towels, and no tanglers like hoses, cords, ropes, or string. Foiled, glittered, or varnished paper is also rejected. Contaminating your cart can trigger a fee on your CPS Energy bill.

What goes in the green organics cart in San Antonio?

The green cart takes food waste (peels, cores, table scraps, eggshells, coffee grounds), food-soiled paper (pizza boxes, napkins, paper plates), and yard trimmings (grass, leaves, small branches under 3 feet). Put material in loose or in kraft, leaf, or plain brown paper bags. Bags marketed as compostable or biodegradable are not accepted.

How does bulky and brush pickup work in San Antonio?

Curbside brush and bulky item collection is provided twice per year. The city notifies you 7 to 10 days ahead with a door hanger stating when to set your pile out. Piles must be no more than eight cubic yards and placed within eight feet of the curb at the front of your house.

Where do I take household hazardous waste and electronics in San Antonio?

The permanent HHW drop-off center is at 7030 Culebra Road, San Antonio, TX 78238, open Tuesday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon. It accepts e-waste, batteries, paint, auto fluids, cooking oil, pesticides, and printer cartridges. Bring a recent CPS Energy bill showing the Environmental Fee and a photo ID. HHW must never go in any curbside cart.

San Antonio Recycling Tips

  • •Remove lids from glass bottles and jars before recycling: the glass goes in the blue cart but the lids go in the brown trash cart.
  • •Never bag your recyclables. Everything in the blue cart goes in loose, and plastic bags have been banned from the cart since August 2024.
  • •Use the city Find My Collection Day tool for your recycling, organics, garbage, and twice-yearly bulky pickup dates rather than guessing.
  • •For a between-pickup bulky load, self-haul free to a city Bulky Waste Collection Center (Bitters, Frio City Road, Culebra, or Rigsby) with your CPS Energy bill and photo ID.
  • •Selling scrap metal like copper or aluminum in Texas means the buyer must be a DPS-registered Metal Recycling Entity and you will need a photo ID, so bring one.
