Recycling in Ocala, Florida

Ocala sits in Marion County, officially branded the Horse Capital of the World for its horse farms, so it is common to see manure and stable waste alongside household trash in local discussions of litter and disposal. The City of Ocala ended curbside recycling collection on July 6, 2026 and moved residents to a citywide drop-off recycling program instead. Marion County, separately, runs 18 recycling centers plus the Baseline Landfill and Transfer Station for anyone in the county, including Ocala residents who want more disposal options than the city drop-off sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Ocala still pick up recycling at the curb?

No. As of July 6, 2026 the City of Ocala discontinued curbside recycling collection and converted household recycling carts into extra garbage carts. Residents can still recycle, but they now have to take materials to one of the City's designated drop-off locations around Ocala, such as Mary Sue Rich Community Center, Ocala Regional Sportsplex, and Jervey Gantt Park, rather than setting a bin out for pickup.

What can you actually put in the recycling dumpsters in Ocala?

The City accepts cardboard, newspaper and inserts, magazines and catalogs, junk mail, phone books, paper bags, office and mixed paper, plastic bottles and jugs, aluminum containers and cans, other metal cans, and rinsed paper milk cartons. It does not accept food waste, styrofoam, electronics, ceramics or dishes, motor oil containers, household hazardous waste, light bulbs, window glass or mirrors, yard waste or construction debris, trash like diapers and clothing, other scrap metals, or plastic bags.

Can you recycle glass bottles in Ocala or Marion County?

Glass is no longer accepted at Marion County's recycling centers or in the City's single-stream recycling; the county's guidance is to bag glass bottles and put them in with household garbage instead. This applies countywide, so there is currently no curbside or drop-off glass recycling option in the Ocala area.

Where do you take old electronics, paint, or chemicals in Ocala?

Marion County's Baseline Recycling Center at 5601 SE 66th St. accepts household electronics like computers, TVs, and cell phones in dedicated green compactor boxes, along with a broader list of household hazardous waste including paints, batteries, and CFL bulbs. Several other county recycling centers, including Dunnellon, Forest Corners, Fort McCoy, Martel, Newton, and Weirsdale, also take electronics, while items like adhesives, pesticides, ammunition, and expired medications go specifically to the Baseline Household Hazardous Waste facility.

What about bulky items, yard waste, and scrap metal in Ocala?

Marion County recycling centers accept household furniture like couches, mattresses, and dressers at select locations (Canal, Dunnellon, Davis, Martel, Newton, and Scrambletown), plus up to two cubic yards of yard waste per day such as leaves, hedge clippings, and small branches under four inches thick. Scrap metal items like appliances, lawn equipment, and pipe are accepted at recycling centers, and larger loads or construction debris can go to the Baseline Landfill for a per-ton fee. Florida has no bottle deposit law, so cans and bottles carry no redemption value; scrapping is mainly about metal weight rather than container deposits.

Ocala Recycling Tips

  • •Curbside recycling in the City of Ocala ended July 6, 2026; if your bin used to get picked up, it is now a second garbage cart, and you need to drive materials to a drop-off site or a Marion County recycling center instead.
  • •Skip glass in the recycling stream entirely. Marion County stopped accepting it at recycling centers, so bag glass bottles and jars with your regular household trash.
  • •If you have electronics to get rid of, head to Baseline, Dunnellon, Forest Corners, Fort McCoy, Martel, Newton, or Weirsdale; not every Marion County recycling center takes electronics.
  • •Unincorporated Marion County residents who pay the solid waste assessment use the 18 county recycling centers at no extra cost, but Ocala city residents inside the incorporated limits should check whether they need a Non-Assessed Recycling Permit to use those same county centers.
  • •There is no bottle deposit in Florida, so cans and plastic bottles have no redemption value here; scrap value in the area comes from metal (appliances, aluminum siding, pipe) taken to a recycling center or Baseline Landfill, not from beverage containers.
