Recycling in Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles runs a four-bin curbside system through LA Sanitation and Environment (LASAN), which serves more than 750,000 households. The blue bin takes recyclables, the green bin takes yard trimmings and food scraps, the black bin takes trash bound for the landfill, and a brown bin covers horse manure in equestrian areas. Using the state's counting method, the City reports a landfill diversion rate of 76.4 percent. Household hazardous waste and electronics go to seven permanent S.A.F.E. Centers spread across the city.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can go in the LA blue recycling bin?

LASAN accepts clean, dry paper and cardboard (flattened), cartons like milk and juice boxes, all aluminum, tin and metal cans, glass bottles and jars, and clean, empty plastics numbered 1, 2, and 5, including bottles with caps, milk jugs, yogurt tubs, and rigid clamshell packaging. The core rule is that materials must be clean and dry, since food residue can contaminate a whole load.

What does NOT belong in the LA blue bin?

Keep out food-soiled paper, window glass, mirrors, auto glass, light bulbs, crystal and ceramics, cloth, mini blinds, kitchen utensils, garden hoses, rubber tires, and construction debris. All electronic waste and batteries are banned from the blue bin too, along with hazardous materials like needles, medications, and aerosol or chemical containers. E-waste and hazardous items go to a S.A.F.E. Center instead.

Can I put food scraps in my green bin in Los Angeles?

Yes. Under California's SB 1383, LA's green bin now takes food scraps such as fruits, vegetables, dairy, eggshells, bread, grains, meat, bones, and coffee grounds, plus food-soiled paper like pizza boxes, alongside yard trimmings, grass, leaves, and branches. Contents are composted, so avoid contamination. LASAN specifically advises keeping products labeled 'compostable' or 'biodegradable' out of the green bin because they do not fully break down at local facilities.

Where do I take household hazardous waste and electronics in LA?

Drop them at one of the city's seven S.A.F.E. Centers (S.A.F.E. stands for Solvents, Automotive, Flammables, Electronics), which are open on weekends from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at no charge to Los Angeles City and County residents. They accept paints, solvents, used motor oil and antifreeze, batteries, aerosol cans, compressed gas cylinders, pool and garden chemicals, TVs, computers, and cell phones. State law limits each vehicle to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit.

How do I get rid of large furniture or a mattress in LA?

LASAN offers free bulky item pickup for residents it services. Schedule a curbside collection of items like mattresses, couches, doors, carpet, and other large furniture by calling the 24-hour Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489 or using the MyLA311 app. The city also runs free monthly bulky-item drop-off events at five district yards for furniture, carpet, shelving, and wood.

Los Angeles Recycling Tips

  • •Rinse and dry containers before they go in the blue bin. LASAN warns that a single food-soiled load can be treated as contamination and diverted from recycling.
  • •Only plastics numbered 1, 2, and 5 belong in the blue bin. Other plastic numbers, plastic bags, and film are not on LASAN's accepted list, so keep them out.
  • •Use the green bin for kitchen food scraps now, not just yard waste. Under SB 1383 the green bin accepts meat, bones, dairy, and coffee grounds, but skip 'compostable' utensils and bags.
  • •For paint, motor oil, batteries, and old electronics, plan a weekend trip to a S.A.F.E. Center. They are open Saturday and Sunday 9 AM to 3 PM and are free, with a 15-gallon or 125-pound per-vehicle limit.
  • •Redeem CRV bottles and cans for cash at a certified recycling center rather than tossing them in the blue bin. California pays 5 cents on containers under 24 oz and 10 cents on those 24 oz and larger.
