The Nicole Bernson SAFE Center is a permanent household hazardous waste and electronics drop-off in Northridge, operated by LA Sanitation & Environment. SAFE stands for Solvents, Automotive, Flammables, and Electronics, and the center exists specifically to take the dangerous household products that can't go in your regular trash or recycling bins. Drop-off is free for Los Angeles residents. Accepted household hazardous waste includes paint and thinners, solvents and cleaners, pesticides and pool chemicals, aerosols, used motor oil and filters, antifreeze, car and household batteries, fluorescent tubes and bulbs, and propane and other small gas cylinders. On the electronics side the center takes computers, monitors, televisions, printers, cell phones, and similar e-waste. Home-generated sharps are accepted in approved rigid, sealed containers. This is a residential program only: business or commercial hazardous waste is not accepted, and there is a per-visit limit on how much you can bring. SAFE Centers operate on weekends, generally from 9 AM to 3 PM. Because the exact days can change, it is worth confirming the current schedule before you go by calling LA Sanitation at 1-800-773-2489.
