Recycling in Jacksonville, Florida

Jacksonville runs curbside recycling through the city's Solid Waste Division, collected every other week in a yellow-lid cart, and unlike many Florida cities it accepts glass bottles and jars right in that same cart rather than routing glass to a separate drop-off. Household hazardous waste and electronics do not go curbside at all: residents take those to the city's HHW Facility on Commonwealth Avenue or to a mobile collection event. The city's own landfill, Trail Ridge Landfill in Baldwin, handles regular waste and yard waste disposal for a fee. Florida has no bottle deposit law, so refundable container deposits are not part of the picture here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Jacksonville curbside recycling accept glass?

Yes. Green, brown and clear glass bottles and jars go straight into the yellow-lid recycling cart with everything else, just discard the lids with regular garbage. That puts Jacksonville ahead of several other Florida cities that dropped glass from curbside programs and pushed it to drop-off bins instead.

What can't go in the Jacksonville recycling cart?

The city's do-not-recycle list includes #4 plastics like cling wrap and grocery bags, #6 plastics such as Styrofoam and plastic cutlery, aerosol cans, shredded paper, batteries, cables or wires, rubber, and any food or yard waste. Mixing these in causes contamination that can get a whole truckload sent to the landfill instead of the recycling stream, so when in doubt the city says throw it in the trash.

Where does Jacksonville trash and recycling actually go?

Regular garbage and yard waste collected by the city are taken to Trail Ridge Landfill at 5110 U.S. Highway 301 South in Baldwin, about four and a half miles south of I-10. It's open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m., closed Sundays, and charges a per-ton fee for household garbage and yard waste dropped off directly.

How do Jacksonville residents get rid of household hazardous waste and old electronics?

Neither can go in the curbside cart. The Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 2675 Commonwealth Avenue takes paint, motor oil, pesticides, car and rechargeable batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and similar items free for Duval County residents, open Tuesday through Saturday. The same facility and the city's periodic mobile collection events also take e-waste like TVs, computer monitors, printers and small appliances, with a limit of three CRTs or televisions per customer.

Do Jacksonville scrap yards require ID to buy metal?

Yes. Florida law (Chapter 538, Florida Statutes) requires secondary metals recyclers statewide, including those in Duval County, to collect a seller's photo ID and keep transaction records before paying cash for scrap metal. This is meant to cut down on stolen-metal sales and applies the same way at Jacksonville yards as anywhere else in the state.

Jacksonville Recycling Tips

  • •Rinse glass, plastic and metal containers before tossing them in the yellow-lid cart. Food residue contaminates the whole batch and can get otherwise-recyclable material landfilled instead.
  • •Cardboard has to be flattened and cut down to 2 feet by 3 feet or smaller to go in the cart, so break down big boxes before setting them out.
  • •Household hazardous waste and e-waste never go in the cart or at the curb. Save them for a trip to the Commonwealth Avenue HHW Facility or one of the city's mobile collection events.
  • •Yard waste is collected weekly but never goes in the automated cart. Bag or bundle it separately, keep piles under five cubic yards, and cut limbs to no more than five feet long and 40 pounds.
  • •After a hurricane or major storm, Jacksonville follows its 'Three Cs' rule: collect debris from the yard, compile it separated by type (bagged yard waste, loose branches, construction debris), and curb it at least three feet from mailboxes, hydrants and utilities for pickup.
