The City of Helena Solid Waste Division operates the Solid Waste Transfer Station at 1975 N Benton Ave, just north of Carroll College, along with residential and commercial garbage collection for the city. The Transfer Station handles garbage disposal and permitting and is open for disposal seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., with all vehicles required to be unloaded and out by 4:30 p.m. Customers can pay with a valid City or County permit, or with cash, check, or credit card, with a $6.00 minimum and a tipping fee of $56.75 per ton. The division also accepts most tires, freon appliances, some electronic waste, and offers bulk waste pickup and roll-off container rental within city limits.

Do I need a permit to use the Transfer Station?

No. Everyone is welcome to use the Transfer Station. Residents who pay Solid Waste Assessments are eligible for City or County permits, while other customers can pay with cash, check, credit card, or a commercial account. There is a $6.00 minimum (0 to 200 pounds) and the tipping fee is $56.75 per ton.

What are the disposal hours?

Disposal is open Monday through Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. All vehicles must be unloaded and out of the facility by 4:30 p.m. The administrative office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Can I dispose of tires and appliances?

Most tires are accepted, but not those larger than 3 feet high or 18 inches wide. Appliances containing freon, such as refrigerators, can be disposed of at the Transfer Station. Fees apply; see the Allowable Waste page for details.

Can I schedule a pickup for large or bulk items?

Yes. You can request the Bulk Waste Collection Truck to pick up items you cannot bring to the Transfer Station, such as a couch. Pickups must be scheduled in advance and fees apply. Call 406-447-8082 option 2 to schedule.

Went two times and had the worst experience. Horrible customer service the gentleman in the main office bullied my wife and talked down to her which was so unprofessional. The City of Helena needs to train these people to have more manors and have more professionalism even if they are in the wrong. It’s a waste station not a 5 star business.

The employees especially Eric are awesome. I accidentally threw away my wifes medicine the night before got there first thing next morning and the crew searched the trash bags and found it for me. They went above and beyond. Greatly appreciated. Thank you

We called the tramp truck to pick up a few things that wouldn't fit in our truck and didn't expect them to pick up the old fence wood we had stacked out back and thought we'd have to haul that ourselves but they cleaned it all up and it's wonderful. They did a great job!! Thank you Thank you Thank you
