Calbag Metals Company runs its Portland headquarters at 2495 NW Nicolai Street, on three city blocks off I-405 near I-5, Highway 26, and I-84. The yard is open Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with no appointment for the public. Industrial accounts, scrap dealers, and the public unload at a dock where a buyer weighs, grades, and prices material in front of the seller. Steel is paid in cash on the spot. Loads include pick-up loads, end dumps, flatbeds, B-trains, containers, and dry vans. The buy list runs from aluminum through zirconium and includes copper, brass, stainless steel, lead, radiators, car bodies, and electronics. Catalytic converters require an ID and proof of vehicle ownership, with the name on the title or affidavit matching the person who brings the converter. Payment is a check mailed no sooner than three business days after receipt.

Metro Metals Northwest has bought scrap for more than 30 years from its Portland headquarters yard on NE Columbia Boulevard. Walk-in sellers bring ferrous and non-ferrous metal, including aluminum cans, automobiles, radiators, appliances, and wiring. Electronic material is bought from commercial customers, not from the public. Hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to noon. Sunday is closed, as are New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. Sellers start at the scale. Attendants identify the load, record the heavy weight, and direct the unload. After the light weight, the scale house pays cash or mails a check, depending on the material. Some commodities are held three days under metal-theft rules. The Portland yard also runs mobile car crushing, transportation and logistics, and handheld x-ray testing.

Rivergate Scrap Metals sorts, processes, and packs ferrous and non-ferrous metal at 9645 N. Columbia Blvd in Portland for domestic and international buyers. The management and supervisor team has more than 75 years of combined experience. Sister firms are R.S. Davis Recycling and PNW Metal Recycling. PNW ships ferrous scrap from Longview's deep-water dock. A certified scale weighs every inbound load after a radioactivity screen. Copper, aluminum, stainless steel, steel, iron, lead, insulated wire, catalytic converters, electronic scrap, and automobiles are purchased. Propane tanks must be purged, and wire must be cut to 3 feet or coiled and banded. Asbestos, refrigerants, PCBs, mercury, tires, liquids, and trash cause the whole load to be rejected. Flatbeds, end dumps, and lowboys handle pickup in the Northwest. Receiving is Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Many states restrict cash payment for scrap metal, especially copper and catalytic converters, and require a photo ID and a waiting period. Expect a check or electronic payment at some yards. Call ahead to confirm how a yard pays.
Bring a valid government photo ID. Many states also require a vehicle plate number and, for some items, proof of ownership. Separate metals by type before you go, since mixed loads are paid at the lowest grade.
Yards price scrap by the pound or ton, based on commodity markets such as COMEX copper, minus their processing costs. Prices change daily, so call two or three yards before selling a large load.
Get a real cash offer in about 2 minutes. Free towing, any condition, even if it doesn't run. No haggling, no phone calls.
