Metro Metals Northwest has bought scrap for more than 30 years from its Portland headquarters yard on NE Columbia Boulevard. Walk-in sellers bring ferrous and non-ferrous metal, including aluminum cans, automobiles, radiators, appliances, and wiring. Electronic material is bought from commercial customers, not from the public. Hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to noon. Sunday is closed, as are New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. Sellers start at the scale. Attendants identify the load, record the heavy weight, and direct the unload. After the light weight, the scale house pays cash or mails a check, depending on the material. Some commodities are held three days under metal-theft rules. The Portland yard also runs mobile car crushing, transportation and logistics, and handheld x-ray testing.

Electronics Recycling in Portland: FAQ

Is electronics recycling free in Portland, OR?

Computers, phones, and small electronics are often free to drop off. TVs and CRT monitors frequently carry a fee because the glass and plastic cost money to process. Check the listing for fees.

Should I wipe my devices first?

Yes. Back up and factory-reset phones, tablets, and computers before drop-off. Some recyclers offer certified data destruction for hard drives, which the listing will mention.

Can I put electronics in my curbside bin?

No. Electronics contain batteries and metals that cause fires and contamination in curbside sorting, and many states ban them from the trash.
