Recycling in Jersey City, New Jersey

Jersey City collects trash and recycling once a week, including holidays unless the city says otherwise. The city warns that Recycle Coach's red holiday flags are wrong. Bins go out between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. the day before. Most routes run overnight, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. High-rises are 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Leaf bags for 2026 are free with proof of residency on Saturday afternoons from October 3 through December 19. New Jersey has no bottle deposit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What goes in Jersey City recycling?

All plastics, including lids and tops, all glass jars and bottles, and all cans except paint cans. Leave out plastic or metal utensils, soiled pizza boxes, plastic bags, straws, soft film, hangers, batteries, latex paint cans, and coffee cups, juice boxes, and milk cartons. The city says those cartons have a plastic coating.

When is Jersey City pickup?

Once a week. Use the map or Recycle Coach for the day, and ignore a holiday red flag unless the city itself cancels the day. Set bins out between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. the evening before. Collection for most buildings is 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. High-rises are 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Where do I get 2026 leaf bags in Jersey City?

Saturday park distributions from noon to 3 p.m., October 3 through December 19, 2026, with a utility bill or driver's license. The same bags are at the Municipal Services Complex, 13-15 Linden Avenue East, weekdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. during those dates. Set the filled bags out Wednesday evening for a Thursday morning pickup.

What can I drop at Jersey City Public Works?

13-5 Linden Ave. East, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Clean untreated wood or tree parts longer than 4 feet. Shorter wood is a Forestry pickup at (201) 547-4400. Four tires are free, then $3 a car tire and $10 a truck tire, plus $1 a rim, with proof of residency. Oil-based paint, oil, and antifreeze, up to 5 gallons a person.

Recycling tips for Jersey City

•The city collects on holidays. Do not trust the Recycle Coach red flag by itself.
•Bins out between 5 and 7 p.m. The truck may come overnight.
•Milk cartons and coffee cups stay out because of the plastic coating.
•Leaf bags are Saturdays at noon, October 3 through December 19, 2026.
•Four tires are free at Linden Avenue East. A fifth costs $3.
