Recycling in Orlando, Florida

Orlando runs its own Solid Waste Division separate from Orange County, so trash, recycling and yard waste service inside city limits comes straight from the city, not the county. Recycling is single-stream and picked up weekly in a city-issued cart, and unlike a lot of Florida cities, Orlando's cart accepts glass bottles and jars right at the curb. Anything outside the city limits (much of the surrounding metro is unincorporated Orange County) is billed and collected under different rules through Orange County Utilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can go in the Orlando recycling cart?

Orlando's city-issued recycling cart takes plastic bottles and containers (empty, clean, caps on), glass bottles and jars (empty, clean, lids removed), aluminum, steel and tin cans, flattened cardboard, and paper including newspapers, paper bags, junk mail and drink cartons. Everything should go in loose, not bagged: plastic bags jam the sorting equipment at the recycling facility. Skip food waste, plastic bags, polystyrene foam, and aluminum food pans.

Does Orlando recycle glass at the curb?

Yes. The City of Orlando's residential recycling cart accepts glass bottles and jars alongside plastic, metal cans, cardboard and paper, according to the city's official What Goes Where guide. Rinse containers and pull the lids off before tossing them in. This puts Orlando ahead of many Florida cities that dropped curbside glass years ago.

When does Orlando pick up recycling and trash?

Garbage and recycling are both collected once a week on a schedule tied to your address, and carts need to be at the curb by 6 a.m. on collection day (you can set them out starting at 5 p.m. the evening before). Yard waste also runs weekly, typically the same day as one of your other pickups. Use the city's Trash, Recycling & Yard Waste Pick-Up Schedule tool on orlando.gov to confirm your specific day.

Where can Orlando residents drop off household hazardous waste and electronics?

Household hazardous waste like paint, pesticides, pool chemicals and car fluids cannot go in the cart or curbside trash by law. Orlando residents can take it free of charge to the Orange County Landfill (5901 Young Pine Road) or the Porter Road Transfer Station (1326 Good Homes Road), both open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Electronics with a circuit board (computers, TVs, phones, tablets) count as e-waste and go to the same hazardous waste drop-off sites rather than the recycling cart, and lithium-ion batteries specifically should never go in the trash or recycling cart because they can spark fires in collection trucks.

What happens to yard waste and storm debris after a hurricane in Orlando?

Normal yard waste (grass, leaves, branches, twigs) is collected weekly if bagged or bundled in 4-foot sections under 40 pounds. After a hurricane, Orlando asks residents to separate storm debris into distinct curbside piles: vegetative debris (logs, branches) is kept apart from construction and demolition debris (drywall, fencing, lumber), household hazardous waste, electronics, and appliances, since different contractors and trucks haul each category. Bagged and bundled debris gets picked up fastest; large unbundled piles wait on claw trucks and can take much longer, and debris left between the sidewalk and the house won't be collected at all.

Orlando Recycling Tips

  • •Rinse and remove lids from glass jars and bottles before putting them in the recycling cart, since Orlando does accept glass curbside but caps and residue can contaminate a load.
  • •Never bag your recyclables. Empty everything loose into the cart. Bags and sheets of plastic tangle the sorting machinery at the recycling facility.
  • •Florida has no bottle deposit law, so there's no cash refund for cans or bottles here. If you want money for scrap, aluminum cans and clean scrap metal are worth taking to a local scrap yard instead of the recycling cart.
  • •Large items like sofas, mattresses and standard appliances get picked up free on your yard waste day, up to two per pickup. Just remove refrigerator and freezer doors first so kids can't get trapped inside.
  • •Before a named storm, don't do major yard cleanup or pile up cut branches at the curb. Excess yard waste can wash into storm drains and cause flooding, and city crews may not get to it before the storm hits.
