Medina County Solid Waste District
About This Center
HHW Specialty Waste is temporarily closed due to on-site construction. The facility accepts household hazardous waste, electronics, tires, and appliances with Freon from Medina County residents on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays only, with a ten-item limit per vehicle. Businesses are not allowed to drop off items. For those with more than ten items, an appointment must be made by contacting the office. The center also offers educational materials and hosts the 2024 Fall Foliage Tour. Visitors can inquire about recycling or the recyclability of specific items by asking the experts. Additionally, there is an ongoing mercury collection program due to health risks associated with mercury. An interactive map is available to locate the nearest recycling drop-off location.

The website does not list out specific items like TVs. I'm sure it's a pretty common question. So I called and left a message explaining I needed to drop off a tube TV and wanted to know if they accept them and if so is there a fee. I got a call back the next day which I was impressed with. They had to have told me three times that they open at 7:30 and only accept TVs on Mondays and Wednesdays and it's a $2 fee. They repeated the Monday and Wednesday thing several times. I finally wrapped up the call by saying okay. "That sounds great. I can drop it off at 7:30 and then be back home to start work at 8:00.". She explained I would need to go in the driveway and drive all the way back to the overhead door at the back building. I show up on a Wednesday at 7:25. Someone comes out and tells me the door that accepts TVs doesn't open till 8:00. I wasted a 25-minute drive down there for nothing. It's not conveniently located. They have to be aware that some people are driving a long way and they need to give out accurate information. Not to mention the time and trouble to load stuff up. An old tube TV weighs a ton. It does not seem like it would be that much trouble to accurately state the hours on a phone call.

Upon visiting you'll learn that the only payment method available is cash or check no card payments are accepted at this very new very clean very advanced facility. Staff will politely inform you that you need to visit the bank or the nearby truck stop to use an ATM. The truckstop ATM will cost $4.95 almost as much as a 200lb load of waste. I would posit that either some form of embezzlement of cash transactions is taking place or there's a corrupt connection between waste management leadership and the nearby private ATMs that are steadily earning money on waste management customers. It has the same corrupt feeling that you would get going to the BMV and being forced to use private ATMs owned by someone friendly with BMV bosses.
