No keys, dead battery

How to sell a car with no keys or a dead battery

You can sell a car with no keys or a dead battery by choosing a buyer that tows it and answering the keys and battery questions honestly. On Peddle's form both problems use the same answer, and the car does not have to start.

Last checked October 23, 2026 against Peddle's help center, AAA and NASTF.

No keys or dead battery

Lost the keys or the battery is dead? You can still get an offer.

Peddle asks about keys and battery in its offer form. If you accept, a tow truck comes to the car, so it never has to start.
  • No key or dead battery? Just answer two questions on the form
  • Free towing, so the car never has to start
  • Instant online offer, no account needed

Key points

  • Peddle uses one answer for a missing key, a missing battery and a dead battery: "No, a battery, key, or fob doesn't work or is missing." (help center).
  • A car that needs a jump counts as "No, it doesn't start (or requires a jump-start)." (help center).
  • Peddle says a working key or fob plus a working battery that needs no jump gets a higher offer.
  • AAA answered over 27 million roadside calls in 2024, and about 7 million were battery problems (AAA, April 1, 2025).
  • AAA says heat can cut a battery's typical 3 to 5 year life to as little as 2 years (AAA Mountain West Group, May 5, 2026).
  • Locksmiths who pull manufacturer key codes must verify ID and ownership in person under NASTF rules.

Can you sell a car with no keys?

Yes. Ownership is proven by the title, not the key, so a missing key is a condition issue like a flat tire. Peddle's help article "Do I have to have keys to sell my car?" (updated June 10, 2026) gives two answers to pick: "No, a battery, key, or fob doesn't work or is missing." for keys, and "No, it doesn't start (or requires a jump-start)." for whether it starts. Its carrier tows the car, so nobody has to drive it onto the truck.

The same is true at most junkyards and auto recyclers, which buy cars for parts and metal and usually tow them in. Private buyers are the exception. Almost nobody will hand over cash for a car they cannot start or drive around the block, which is why a missing key pushes most sellers toward an as-is buyer.

One thing to rule out first: if the car might have been stolen and recovered without its keys, contact the police and your insurer before selling. Clear that up before you list it.

Can you sell a car with a dead battery?

Yes, and you have plenty of company. AAA says it received over 27 million roadside calls in 2024, and roughly 7 million were battery issues. Tows and battery calls together made up about 74% of the total. In 2025 AAA's roadside calls passed 30 million, with tows, battery issues and flat tires again the most common (AAA, April 2026).

A car that sits while you decide what to do with it is the classic dead-battery story. AAA says a battery typically lasts 3 to 5 years and that heat can shorten that to as little as 2 years (AAA Mountain West Group, May 5, 2026). If your car has been parked for months, a dead battery may be all that is wrong, or it may be hiding a bigger problem you will only find once it cranks.

Peddle's pickup article (updated July 29, 2026) says its carriers come to the car and can pick up vehicles that do not run, have a dead battery or cannot be driven. If the car is in a garage, a tight driveway or behind a gate, say so when you schedule.

How do you answer the keys and battery questions?

Peddle's offer form asks two separate questions, and most people get stuck on them. Use the table below. A car that needs a jump goes in the does-not-start group, even if it runs fine once jumped. A check engine light by itself does not, according to Peddle's starts and drives article.

Which answer to pick for each key and battery situation
Your situationKeys and battery answerStarts and drives answer

Peddle also defines what counts as drivable, and both a key and a working battery are part of it. Its drivable article says you need the keys in your possession and a functioning battery for the car to be considered drivable. That is why fixing one of the two problems can change your offer, and fixing neither leaves you in the same group.

Can you get a replacement key with just the VIN?

Often, but not with the VIN alone. Manufacturers release key codes and immobilizer data only through dealers and registered locksmiths. The National Automotive Service Task Force runs the registry most locksmiths use, and its D1 form rules say the locksmith must verify the owner in person, see a valid U.S. or Canadian driver's license, and check ownership against a registration, insurance card, bill of sale or title with a matching VIN. State ID cards and passports are not accepted for that step.

On a newer car with plenty of life left, a replacement key can be worth it, because it moves the car into the higher keys answer and opens up private buyers. On an older car you already planned to junk, the math rarely works. Get the as-is offer first, then decide whether a locksmith visit is worth it.

Should you fix the key or battery before selling?

Only when the fix is cheap and certain. Peddle says a working key or fob and a properly installed, working battery that needs no jump gets a higher offer, so the question is whether that bump is bigger than what you spend. These are the common cases.

Fix first or sell as is?
Your situationUsually the better move
Battery is dead, car starts fine with a jumpCompare the offer as is with a new battery's local cost. A working battery that needs no jump moves you to the higher keys answer.
Battery is fine but the key is lostA spare or a locksmith key may be worth it on a newer car. On an older car you plan to junk, sell without it.
Jump does not start the carDo not buy a battery just to sell. The car may have a starter, alternator or fuel pump problem, which Peddle also treats as does not start.
No key and no batterySell as is. Both answers are already at the lowest setting, so new parts rarely change the outcome enough.
Our guidance based on Peddle's keys and battery and starts and drives answer tables. Not financial advice.

The easy way to test it is to get a Peddle offer as the car is today, then price the fix locally. You can update your condition answers before pickup if you change something, and Peddle's offers are free to check.

Who buys cars with no keys or a dead battery?

The buyers that work are the ones that tow. Here is how the main options compare when the car cannot be started or unlocked normally.

Peddle row from its keys, pickup and fees articles, checked October 23, 2026. Other rows are general patterns. Call any local buyer to confirm.

Peddle only buys cars, trucks, vans and SUVs, so a motorcycle, RV, trailer or boat needs a different buyer (help center). It also cannot buy a car with an unpaid loan, because all liens must be paid in full first (help center).

What happens at pickup when the car won't start?

The carrier brings equipment to load a car that does not run. Peddle says the whole process from offer to payment typically takes 2 to 5 days, and that the carrier calls within one business day of your acceptance to set a time (help center). At pickup the driver checks the car against your answers. If a major part is missing or there is damage you did not mention, Peddle presents a revised offer, and declining it cancels the sale (help center).

Keys are part of that check. If you told Peddle you have keys or a title, you must hand them over at or before pickup. If you cannot find them, Peddle's help article (updated June 15, 2026) says to change your answer to the no-keys or "Not sure, I can't find my title" option before the truck arrives.

Pickup-day checklist for a car with no keys or a dead battery

  1. Confirm your answers still match the car. Found a key? Update the form. Battery now missing? Update that too.
  2. Have the signed title ready, or follow Peddle's no-title instructions if it is lost.
  3. Unlock the car if you can, or warn the carrier it is locked with no key, and clear a path to it. Mention garages and tight spaces.
  4. Remove personal items, toll tags and garage remotes. Peddle's pickup checklist says plates are removed at pickup (help center).
  5. If you cannot be there, confirm with the carrier first. Peddle says the owner signs the title in advance and the person taking payment must be over 18 (help center).
  6. After the car is gone, file your state's release of liability if it has one, then cancel insurance and registration.

What mistakes do people make selling a car with no keys?

Buying a battery for a car that will not start with a jump is the most common one. If jumping does nothing, the battery is probably not the only problem, and Peddle already treats starter, alternator and fuel pump failures as a car that does not start. Save the money.

The second is saying the keys are there because you think they might turn up. If they are not handed over at pickup, the offer can change on the spot. Pick the no-keys answer now and update it if you find them.

The third is pulling the battery to sell separately before the pickup. A missing battery is the same low answer as a dead one, but a buyer who expected a battery to be in the car will see the difference. If you want to know what an old battery is worth as scrap, check our car battery scrap value tool before you decide, and report the change on the form.

If the title went missing along with the keys, read junk car removal without a title. A car that sat long enough to kill the battery may also have failed its last inspection, which we cover in selling a car that failed inspection or emissions. Parked cars are also targets for converter theft, so see selling a car with a missing catalytic converter if the exhaust suddenly roars, and selling a car with a salvage or rebuilt title if the car was in a wreck.

For a rough idea of value first, use the junk car value calculator or our totaled car calculator, and see junk car removal for cash for how pickup and payment work.

No keys and dead battery questions

Can you sell a car with no key?

Yes. A missing key changes the offer, not whether you can sell. Peddle's help center says to answer the keys question "No, a battery, key, or fob doesn't work or is missing." and the starts question "No, it doesn't start (or requires a jump-start)." Its carrier tows the car, so it never has to be driven or started.

Can you sell a car with a dead battery?

Yes. Peddle treats a dead battery, even one that starts with a jump, as "No, a battery, key, or fob doesn't work or is missing." and a car that needs a jump as one that does not start. Its help center says carriers can pick up cars with a dead battery.

Should I replace the battery before selling?

Peddle says having a working key or fob and a properly installed, working battery that does not need a jump gets a higher offer. Get the offer both ways: once as the car is, and compare that gap with what a new battery would cost you locally. If a jump does not start it either, the problem may be bigger than the battery.

Can I order a key with my VIN number?

Dealers and registered locksmiths can look up key codes by VIN, but only after verifying ownership. Under NASTF rules, a Vehicle Security Professional must check the owner in person, see a valid U.S. or Canadian driver's license, and verify ownership with a registration, insurance card, bill of sale or title before any security work.

Will a junkyard take my car if I lost the keys?

Many will, because they buy cars for parts and metal and tow them anyway, but policies vary by yard. Call ahead, tell them the keys are gone, and ask whether that changes the price or the paperwork they need.

What if the key is stuck in the ignition?

Peddle's keys table treats a key stuck in the ignition as "Yes, the battery works or I have a working key or fob." Answer the starts and drives question based on what the car actually does.

Do I need to be there when the tow truck comes?

Peddle says you may not need to be present, but confirm with your carrier first. The owner signs the title in advance, and the person collecting payment must be over 18. If you said you have keys, they must be handed over at pickup.

Does Peddle buy cars with no keys and no title?

Peddle says it has many buyers for cars without a title and that missing keys only change the keys answer. Answer both questions honestly. If you later find the title or a key, update your answers before pickup.

How we checked

On October 23, 2026 we read Peddle's help articles on keys, the keys and battery question, the starts and drives question, what counts as drivable, pickup, keys and titles at pickup, timing and fees; AAA's 2024 roadside figures, 2025 update and battery life guidance; and NASTF's D1 form rules. We also reviewed the current top search results and common seller questions on forums. We do not quote Peddle offer amounts, key prices or battery prices because they depend on the car and location.
