Keep the battery upright in a rigid plastic tray or box. Protect the terminals from metal contact, secure the load against tipping, and keep leaking batteries separate. Wear eye and hand protection and do not open, drain, or dismantle the case.

Lead-acid battery scrap price per pound
Ask the recycler whether it quotes by weight or by the battery. For a weight quote, the calculation is total accepted battery weight × price per pound. A 40-pound battery at an example $0.21 per pound is $8.40; two batteries of that weight would be $16.80 before any deductions. Replace the planning rate with a local quote.
A per-battery offer can be easier to compare with a retailer core refund, but check whether the refund is cash, store credit, or a return of a charge you already paid. Ask about the return deadline and battery-type requirements. A larger advertised number does not always mean a better net result.
Keep the battery intact. Its whole weight is not pure lead weight, and draining acid or opening the case is not a way to improve this estimate. Confirm acceptance and transport instructions before visiting a buyer. For other chemistries, use the battery recycling checker.

Core programs encourage closed-loop collection when a replacement is sold. Retail terms and state rules vary, so compare the actual refund, cash, or credit with the local recycler's quote.

How much is a golf cart battery worth for scrap?
Weigh one battery and multiply by the yard's price per pound for lead-acid batteries. Golf carts usually run on several 6-volt deep-cycle batteries, and a common one, the Trojan T-105, weighs 62 pounds, so at $0.21 per pound one battery is about $13 and a set of six is about $78 before any yard deductions. Yards do not price lithium golf cart batteries this way, so ask a battery recycler about those.
Is a core refund better than selling a battery for scrap?
It can be. Compare the final scrap payout with the refund or store credit on your replacement receipt. Remember that a core refund may simply return a charge you already paid and can have a deadline or matching-battery requirement.
Can I put a car battery in curbside recycling?
No. Vehicle batteries contain lead and corrosive acid. Take them to a battery retailer, auto-parts store, household hazardous-waste program, or licensed scrap recycler that accepts lead-acid batteries.
Can I use this calculator for lithium battery scrap prices?
No. This calculator values conventional lead-acid vehicle batteries, not lithium-ion EV or high-voltage hybrid packs. Those packs require specialist handling and are valued by chemistry, condition, model, and reuse potential, not a conventional lead-acid price per pound.
