Tools for Removing Parts Before Junking
Pull high-value parts before scrapping and pocket the difference. A catalytic converter alone is worth $100-$300.
Pull Your Cat Converter First
Worth $100-$300 alone. Takes 15 minutes with the right tools. More if you have a Honda or Toyota.
Drain Fluids to Avoid Fees
Some yards dock $20-50 if you show up with fluids. Drain them yourself in 20 minutes.
Transport It Safely
Most junkyards offer free towing. If you're hauling it yourself, secure it properly.
Maximize Your Payout
Having the right tools means you keep more cash.
- •Remove aluminum wheels ($30-60 extra)
- •Pull copper radiator ($20-40 extra)
- •Separate battery ($10-15 core charge)
How does RecycleFind decode a junk car VIN?
RecycleFind sends the 17-character VIN to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration vPIC decoder. NHTSA returns year, make, model, body class, and GVWR class. RecycleFind maps body class to a U.S. curb-weight table in pounds, then runs the same scrap math as the junk car value calculator: current steel prices plus a catalytic converter range.
RecycleFind does not use GVWR as scrap weight. GVWR is the loaded rating. Yards pay on actual metal weight, so RecycleFind uses typical curb weight for that body type, or NHTSA curb weight when NHTSA provides it.
How much is a junk car worth by VIN?
RecycleFind estimates $200-$500 for most complete U.S. cars. A sedan at about 3,000 lb and a mid-range converter lands in that band. A truck or SUV at 4,500-4,800 lb with an intact Honda or Toyota converter reaches $400-$600. Stripped shells pay less because the converter and aluminum are gone.
| Body type RecycleFind uses | Estimated curb weight |
|---|---|
| Sedan | 3,000 lb |
| Coupe | 2,800 lb |
| Compact Car | 2,500 lb |
| SUV | 4,500 lb |
| Truck | 4,800 lb |
| Minivan/Van | 4,200 lb |
| Wagon | 3,200 lb |
| Hatchback | 2,700 lb |
| Sports Car | 3,000 lb |
| Luxury | 3,800 lb |

Junk car VIN decoder: frequently asked questions
How much is my junk car worth by VIN?
RecycleFind estimates junk car scrap value from the VIN by reading year, make, model, and body class from the U.S. NHTSA VIN decoder, then applying RecycleFind scrap steel prices and catalytic converter ranges. Most complete U.S. cars land in the $200-$500 range. Heavier trucks and SUVs climb higher when the converter is intact.
What is a VIN decoder for a junk car?
A junk car VIN decoder turns the 17-character vehicle identification number into the details a scrap estimate needs: year, make, model, and body type. RecycleFind does that with NHTSA vPIC, then prices the metal and converter. RecycleFind does not sell title history, theft records, or accident reports.
Where is the VIN on a car?
The VIN is on the driver's side of the dashboard, visible through the windshield, on the driver's door jamb sticker, and on the title and registration. RecycleFind needs all 17 characters. A VIN never uses the letters I, O, or Q.
Can RecycleFind decode a VIN without a title?
Yes. The VIN is on the vehicle even when the title is missing. RecycleFind still returns a scrap estimate. Most states still require a title to complete a junk sale, with exceptions for some older vehicles. Confirm the yard's paperwork rules before pickup.
Does RecycleFind use Canadian vehicle data?
No. RecycleFind reads U.S. NHTSA vPIC data and estimates weight in pounds from U.S. body-type tables. RecycleFind does not call the Canadian vehicle specifications endpoint.
Is a VIN decoder the same as a Carfax report?
No. RecycleFind uses the VIN to identify the vehicle for a scrap estimate. A history report covers accidents, titles, and odometer brands. RecycleFind does not provide those records.
