Phoenix owns two strategically placed transfer stations, one in north Phoenix and one in South Phoenix. The transfer stations temporarily house all of the trash from Phoenix in preparation for hauling the materials to the State Route 85 Landfill in Buckeye. All recyclables in Phoenix are also sent to the transfer stations to be sorted by the adjoining Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). The MRF contains a series of machines and conveyors that sort glass, paper, metal, cardboard, and plastic into separate bales. All green organics are sent to the 27th Avenue Compost Facility to be processed into quality compost. The transfer stations accept appliances, tires, and other waste materials for a fee, with specific guidelines for disposal. Residents can take up to two CRT units per household per month free of charge, with a fee of $20 per unit after the first two, plus additional disposal fees. Tires are accepted with a limit of five automobile tires per year, with rims removed. Commercial hazardous waste, radioactive waste, and certain other materials are prohibited. Customers must comply with disposal fees and handling guidelines, including the requirement for an Express Exit Disposal Permit Decal for commercial business customers. Residents can purchase compost containers for $5 and enroll in the Certified Green Organics Program for vegetation-only loads. Contact details for further information can be obtained by sending an email to the provided address.

Manufacturers and industrial plants are the customers at this Phoenix commercial recycler, not walk-in households. Generated Materials Recovery has operated for 25 years, marketing commercial and industrial cardboard, plastic, metal, and foam, and handling secure obsolete product destruction. The company owns hundreds of open tops, balers, compactors, and densifiers, and runs its own tractor trailers and roll-off trucks. Industries served include dairy production, foam fabrication, mattress plants, warehouses and distribution, material recovery facilities, packaging, print and publishing, and mining. The North 27th Avenue site is its corporate office and materials processing center.

Municipal drop-off sites and transfer stations usually take flattened boxes free. For large commercial volumes, a recycler may provide a baler or container and sometimes pays for clean bales.
Flatten boxes and remove packing foam and plastic. Normal tape and labels are fine, and a little grease on a pizza box is accepted by most programs. Wet or soaked cardboard is not.
Only in bulk. Baled, clean corrugated cardboard is a commodity, but household quantities are not worth paying for.
