Greif's Mobile recycling plant is an industrial paper and plastics recycling operation located at 1750 9th St., Bldg 44, in the Brookley Complex. As part of Greif's Recycling Group, the plant collects, processes, and bales recyclable fiber such as corrugated cardboard, paperboard, containerboard, pulp, printing paper, and specialty plastics, which are then shipped to Greif's paper mills. It serves commercial generators with collection (roll-offs, compactors, routes, and full loads), baling, waste audits, fiber analysis, brokerage, and salvage recovery of damaged and off-spec materials rather than serving as a public household drop-off.

Mobile County built this drop-off and processing facility, and Goodwill Gulf Coast has run it since it opened in November 2014. It takes residential household recyclables from the general public seven days a week, then ships them on to other processors. The accepted list covers paper, paperboard, cardboard, plastics #1 through #7, glass, aluminum, steel, plastic bags, clothing, flat screen TVs and monitors, computers and printers, and small appliances. Batteries, light bulbs, tires, yard waste, scrap metal, paint, motor oil, Styrofoam, and large appliances stay out, and the accepted list shifts with market demand.

Cardboard Recycling in Mobile: FAQ

Where can I drop off a lot of cardboard in Mobile, AL?

Municipal drop-off sites and transfer stations usually take flattened boxes free. For large commercial volumes, a recycler may provide a baler or container and sometimes pays for clean bales.

Does cardboard need to be clean?

Flatten boxes and remove packing foam and plastic. Normal tape and labels are fine, and a little grease on a pizza box is accepted by most programs. Wet or soaked cardboard is not.

Do recyclers pay for cardboard?

Only in bulk. Baled, clean corrugated cardboard is a commodity, but household quantities are not worth paying for.
