Metro Group headquarters at 3150 W. 900 S in Salt Lake City buys scrap from retail customers and commercial accounts, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Bill Bond opened this Salt Lake yard in 1976 as Metro Steel Distributors. The family scrap trade began in the early 1900s, and fourth- and fifth-generation relatives still run it, with brokerage and rail transloading alongside the yard. Utah law requires an ID to sell metal here. The yard takes cast iron, heavy melting steel, plate and structural, stainless, copper, insulated copper wire, aluminum cans, brass, lead, radiators, appliances, and lead-acid car batteries. Lithium batteries are turned away. Cars and ATVs need a Utah dismantler permit, form TC-656, at drop-off. Catalytic converters need proof of ownership, a driver's license copy, and fingerprints. Refrigerators need freon removed by a certified EPA 608 technician.

Most scrap yards buy lead-acid car batteries by the pound or per battery. Auto parts stores usually take them free and may refund a core charge.
Tape the terminals of lithium and 9-volt batteries or bag each one separately. Loose lithium batteries can short and start fires in bins and trucks.
Alkaline batteries are legal to trash in most states, but rechargeable and lithium batteries are not. Recycling all of them is the safe choice.
