Caja del Rio Landfill takes in 150,000 tons of waste a year and accepts waste from Santa Fe County only. The Santa Fe Solid Waste Management Agency runs it under a permit issued in November 2015. Cash customers haul in self-dumping trailers Monday through Saturday, and commercial customers need a pre-approved account. The landfill accepts industrial solid waste, petroleum contaminated soil, sludge, spills of chemical substances or commercial products, treated formerly characterized hazardous waste, and vehicle wash sump waste. It refuses out-of-county waste, bulk liquids, hazardous and radioactive waste, lead-acid batteries, ash, infectious waste, and regulated asbestos. Green waste, scrap metal, appliances, and e-waste are not accepted here.

The Buckman Road Recycling & Transfer Station, known as BuRRT, takes trash, drop-off recycling, green waste, scrap metal, appliances, scrap tires, electronics, and construction and demolition debris from Santa Fe County. The City of Santa Fe owns the site and the Santa Fe Solid Waste Management Agency operates it. The station opens daily, with household hazardous waste drop-off on Fridays and Saturdays for Santa Fe residents only. It refuses out-of-county waste, lead-acid batteries, hazardous and radioactive waste, bulk liquids, and self-dumping trailers. A livestream camera of the entrance shows the line before a trip, and size limits apply to lumber, concrete, stumps, and loads over 12,500 pounds gross vehicle weight.

Most transfer stations and convenience centers take household garbage and bulky items, but some serve only commercial haulers and county sites may ask for proof of residency. Check the listing or call before you go.
Fees are usually charged by weight or by load, with surcharges for tires, mattresses, appliances, and construction debris. Some county convenience centers are free for residents because local taxes fund them.
A transfer station is a collection point: waste is unloaded, consolidated, and trucked to a landfill or processing plant. A landfill is the final disposal site. Convenience centers are small residential drop-off sites, often run by the county.
