Recycling Harlingen Proud is a volunteer organization dedicated to educating the community on littering behavior, implementing programs to deter littering, promoting beautification, volunteerism, and ensuring a clean and safe living environment. The center accepts cardboard such as brown corrugated boxes, shoe and food boxes that are brown or gray inside, excluding those coated with wax or plastic. Paper items like newspapers, catalogs, magazines, office paper, and books are also accepted. Aluminum and steel items like beverage cans are recyclable, while plastics marked with a triangle symbol containing numbers 1 or 2, including water bottles, soda bottles, and detergent bottles, are welcome. Visitors are advised to rinse milk bottles, food cans, and soda cans before recycling. Used motor oil can be recycled at local oil change providers, and electronics at stores selling office equipment. Items not accepted include gasoline or diesel containers, glass, disposable batteries, styrofoam, diapers, explosives, paint cans, CFLs, tires, and plastic bags.
