Great Falls collects residential garbage through its own Solid Waste Division, but recycling is handled by private businesses around town rather than a curbside cart. City code is specific about how refuse is presented: garbage has to be wrapped, extra rubbish needs 32-gallon containers, and tree trimmings must be bundled to weight. Cascade County runs a separate punch-card system for the rural collection sites outside the city.

Under city code section 8.8.060, all garbage placed in residential refuse containers must be wrapped with paper or plastic. Under 8.8.080, extraordinary accumulations of rubbish must be placed for collection in containers no bigger than 32 gallons.

The county mails solid waste punch cards each year, and the staffed Rural Collection Sites are open four days a week to Cascade County Solid Waste District members and special permit holders, except the Monarch site which runs a seasonally adjusted schedule. The sites are for household waste only, and punch cards are not valid for special waste or Freon-containing materials.
