The Rio Grande Recycle Center in Aspen, located on Rio Grande Place, does not accept trash, single-stream recycling, or household donations. They have specific guidelines for recycling: glass bottles, metal scraps, clothing, sheets, towels, and shoes in good condition are accepted, while toys, stuffed animals, pillows, and rags will be discarded as trash. Grass and leaves can be recycled in the yard waste bin, but no branches, brush, or trees are allowed. Only household batteries are accepted, and lead or car batteries should be taken to the landfill for recycling. Food can be recycled for composting in Aspen. Yard waste, including grass and leaves, must be recycled in designated containers at the center, with no plastic bags allowed. Commercial landscapers must take yard waste to the Pitkin County Landfill for a fee. Visitors can also donate household items at the Aspen Thrift Store or Motherload Mercantile at the Pitkin County Solid Waste Center, and non-perishable foods can be donated to Lift Up at the Pitkin County Human Services Building. Additional food assistance programs are available for donations, and visitors are encouraged to contact local food rescue services for non-expired food donations.
