About this center

The South Kent Recycling & Waste Center in Byron Center is operated by the Kent County Department of Public Works and is home to the only open, active municipal solid waste landfill in Kent County, which opened in October 1982. Residents and businesses can self-haul trash here, and licensed waste haulers also use the site. Beyond landfill disposal, the center handles cardboard-only recycling plus drop-off recycling for electronics, appliances, scrap metal, tires, compressed gas tanks, and holiday string lights, and it offers household hazardous waste disposal through the SafeChem program. Note there is no single-stream recycling drop-off at this location.

The facility accepts household and business trash, cardboard (cardboard-only recycling), electronics, appliances, scrap metal, tires, compressed gas tanks such as propane and helium, holiday string lights, and household hazardous waste through the SafeChem program. There is no single-stream recycling drop-off at this location.

What are the hours?

Monday through Friday 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, and Saturday 7:30 am to 3:30 pm. The center is closed Sunday. Closing times are exact, and customers still dumping after closing may be charged an After Hours Service Fee.

How much does it cost and what payment is accepted?

Disposal fees apply for trash and certain items per the county's posted Waste Disposal Fees. Residents using the recycling drop-off stations are not charged a service fee. Cash, check, or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover) are accepted, with a 3% convenience fee added for credit cards.

Been here multiple times and never had a problem. Girls at the booth are always friendly and its a fair price to throw garage away. Only thing is I wish they would run a sweeper at the landing more often but this place is great!

Very poor landfill maintance for dump trailer area........anxiety goes up if I'll get a nail in tire....and 50/50 you will Small bussiness owners and operators don't need that extra 45 mins and 100 dollars to change out a tire and get new if I can't plug......thanks south kent for adding extra frustrations and additions to my overall budget
