Operations began at the Davis Material Recovery and Transfer Facility located in Layton, Utah, in June 2020. The facility processes co-mingled and single stream recyclables, recovering valuable materials such as cardboard, mixed paper, plastics 1 and 2, aluminum cans, and steel cans. Non-recyclable plastics and some paper are used to create an engineered fuel. The facility features a highly mechanized system with various sorting processes including trommels, disc screens, optical sorters, magnet separators, and eddy current separators. The recovered materials are stored in bunkers and then pressed into bales for sale to market. Waste from the facility is transferred to a regional landfill, extending the life of the Davis Landfill in Layton. The facility does not accept large tires, vehicles, or appliances, and it is not open to the general public. Visitors can tour the facility by scheduling in advance. The landfill operates with different hours in summer and winter, and the facility does not accept vehicles, large tires, or appliances. Residents can drop off household hazardous waste and electronic waste at designated times, and the landfill also offers compost and wood chips for sale. Special waste disposal services are available with advance arrangements required. The facility does not accept business hazardous waste, and there are specific guidelines for dropping off green waste for recycling. The thrift store at the facility operates on specific days and accepts donations.
