The Butte-Silver Bow Landfill sits 5 miles west of Butte off Interstate 90 at 121074 N. Browns Gulch Road, near the Rocker interchange. It accepts all standard residential garbage, recyclables including antifreeze, automotive batteries, cardboard, metals, used motor oil, and yard waste, as well as tires for a per-unit fee. Special waste such as asbestos, contaminated soils, or large demolition loads can be accepted by prior arrangement at (406) 782-1463 or (406) 723-5295. Curbside recycling pickup is also available through McGree Trucking for an additional fee.

What are the landfill's hours?

The main landfill is open 7 days a week, Sunday through Saturday, 8:00 am to 5:15 pm for large loads. No large loads are accepted after 5:15 pm and must be unloaded by 5:30 pm. Small household bagged garbage is accepted until 5:30 pm at the bins behind the Scale House. The facility is closed on all federal government holidays.

What recyclable materials does the landfill accept?

The Butte Landfill accepts antifreeze, automotive batteries, cardboard, metals, used motor oil, and yard waste for recycling.

Are tires accepted, and is there a fee?

Yes, tires are accepted with a fee. Small passenger car and truck tires cost $5.00 each, semi-truck tires cost $10.00 each, and heavy equipment tires cost $25.00 each.

As a new resident of Butte with no household trash pickup I was very excited to learn the dump waives fees for household trash. We have been treated very nicely at each visit and it’s about as easy as it can be to get in drop my trash and leave. They lose one star for the lack of a meaningful recycling program. My fingers are crossed that this will change.

Not actually open till 5:30. You have to be unloaded and out by 5:15 so don't plan on a quick dump run after work.
