Alco Iron & Metal began on a quarter acre in San Leandro in 1953 and is still owned by the same family. The Davis Street yard buys ferrous and non-ferrous scrap: steel, cast iron, car and truck engines, aluminum, copper, brass, stainless, nickel, and lead-acid batteries. Individuals and businesses haul material in, and staff weigh, grade, and pay on site. Roll-off containers in 20, 30, 40, and 50 yard sizes and forklift bins go to customer sites for ongoing scrap. Alco also dismantles transformers, handles demolition, and sells and fabricates new metal. The yard refuses catalytic converters, airbags, fluorescent lights, refrigerants, and every battery except lead-acid. Weekday hours start at 7 a.m.

GreenWaste San Leandro Transfer Station, formerly Certified Blue Recycling, takes construction and demolition debris and bulky loads on Williams Street. It accepts concrete (clean, or mixed with some wire and rebar), carpet, clean fill dirt and sod, source-separated drywall, C&D loads that run over 75 percent recyclable, and mixed debris from house clean-outs, appliances, unvarnished furniture, and cardboard hauled by self-haul vehicles, junk haulers, and contractors. Carpet arrives dry, free of tack strips, cut into 5-foot widths, and separated from pad. Loads are measured by volume with no allowance for air space, a half-ton minimum charge applies per vehicle, and a load checking program is in effect. The site refuses hazardous waste, yard waste, brush, car and RV parts, treated wood, wet garbage, and food waste. It closes on Sundays.

Concrete and asphalt recyclers often take clean loads for a low fee or free, since they crush it into base material. Mixed debris costs more and usually goes to a transfer station or C&D landfill.
Separated loads of clean concrete, metal, or wood are cheaper to drop off than mixed loads. Ask the site how it prices each material.
Clean scrap drywall can be recycled at some facilities, but painted or demolition drywall usually cannot. Call ahead.
