How to Recycle Chip Bags & Snack Wrappers

Quick answer
Chip bags, candy wrappers, and many snack pouches are made from bonded plastic and foil layers, so they usually do not belong in curbside or store film recycling. Check for a brand take-back program; otherwise use the local trash route. Before you go, confirm that a local recycling center accepts the material in its current condition.

Can you recycle chip bags?
Not at the curb, and not in grocery store film bins. Chip bags are layers of plastic and metal. How2Recycle's Store Drop-off bins take polyethylene bags and wraps, and its January 2025 guidelines rule salty snack and chocolate packaging out of the Store Drop-off label. Putting chip bags in those bins contaminates the bales of clean film.
Check for a free program first. Some snack brands sponsor free TerraCycle programs that take their own wrappers, and TerraCycle's free programs page lists them. Each one takes only that brand, and some have waitlists.
If no free program covers your bags, the paid option is TerraCycle's Candy and Snack Wrappers Zero Waste Box (sponsored). On October 24, 2026 it cost $105, $171 or $264 for a small, medium or large box, and a 10 x 13 inch Zero Waste Bag for the same wrappers cost $49. It takes foil-lined wrappers, flexible packaging and blister packs, but not paper-based wrappers. The price covers shipping both ways. The package may look like plastic film, but a foil or paper laminate prevents it from moving through ordinary PE film recycling. A recyclable claim applies only to the program named by the label or brand, not automatically to curbside collection.

Can chip bags go with plastic grocery bags?
Usually no. Chip bags and snack wrappers are often foil-laminated or made from mixed layers, while store bins generally want clean polyethylene film only.
Are snack pouches recyclable if they have a recycling symbol?
Only through the route named by the package or brand. A symbol does not guarantee that your curbside or store-drop-off program accepts the pouch.
Can you recycle chip bags at the grocery store?
No. Grocery store film bins take clean polyethylene bags and wraps. Salty snack packaging does not qualify for How2Recycle's Store Drop-off label, and most chip bags are foil-lined layers that would contaminate the film.
How do you recycle chip bags if nothing local takes them?
Use a free brand program if your snack brand runs one through TerraCycle. If not, TerraCycle's paid Candy and Snack Wrappers box ($105 small) or bag ($49) takes them, with shipping both ways included. Otherwise they go in the trash.
