Special Instructions
Flat glass, also called float glass, is a different chemistry from container glass and cannot go in a curbside bin. Hennepin County puts it plainly: broken windows are not recyclable and belong in the garbage. Commercial flat-glass recycling does exist, but it is largely a manufacturing scrap loop rather than a post-consumer one, and the laminated-glass processors that handle interlayered panes take material from glass producers, distributors, and replacement companies rather than from households. The realistic paths are donating a complete unit, sending vintage glass to salvage, or letting your contractor haul the rest as construction debris.
Environmental Impact
Reuse is the only diversion a homeowner controls here. The National Glass Association reported in 2022 that roughly 25 percent of flat glass is recycled as cullet, essentially all of it factory scrap, alongside a near complete lack of recycling for flat glass that reaches end of life in the field. Laminated architectural and automotive glass is harder still, because the PVB plastic interlayer has to be mechanically separated from the glass before any of it becomes usable cullet, which needs industrial equipment. Keeping serviceable windows in service, by maintaining and repairing rather than replacing, avoids the disposal question altogether and is the change with the largest effect.
