Recycling in Richmond, Virginia

Richmond splits its waste duties: the city's Department of Public Works collects trash in a city-issued supercan, while recycling runs through the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority. CVWMA recently added paper cups and pizza boxes to its list, and it still excludes several things people assume are fine, including shredded paper, receipts, and hardback books. The city also gives residents two places to self-haul bulk, brush, and appliances for free.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can Richmond residents put in recycling?

CVWMA accepts aluminum and steel cans with lids placed back inside, food and beverage cartons with plastic caps replaced, glass bottles and jars with metal caps left off, paper and flattened corrugated cardboard, and plastic bottles, jugs, and tubs with caps replaced. Paper cups and pizza boxes are now accepted too, as long as cups are clean with no lids or straws and boxes are free of food, though grease is fine.

What does CVWMA not accept?

Plastic bags and wrap, Styrofoam, shredded paper, batteries, hoses and cords, aluminum foil, cooking pans and pot sets, drinking glasses, canning jars, Pyrex, window glass and ceramics, gift wrap, ice cream containers, receipts, hardback books, spray pumps, plastic bottles that held motor oil, and plastic garden plant pots.

What are the supercan rules in Richmond?

Residential trash is collected once per week, Monday through Thursday, and must be placed inside a city-issued supercan. Items in non-issued cans or containers will not be collected and a violation notification is issued. Put the can out no earlier than 4 p.m. the day before and no later than 6 a.m. on collection day, and remove it from city property by 7 a.m. the day after.

Can I get an extra trash can in Richmond?

City Code provides one green supercan per residence. Up to three additional brown cans may be purchased for $55 each, billed to the water utility account in your name and ordered through the 3-1-1 call center or online. Delivery takes 7 to 14 business days. Businesses such as churches and apartment complexes are allowed a maximum of four cans at $23.75 per month each.

Where can Richmond residents drop off bulk items and appliances for free?

At the East Richmond Road Convenience Center, 3800 East Richmond Road, or the Southside Transfer Station, 3520 North Hopkins Road. Both take appliances, bulk, and brush from city residents at no charge, and these are the two city-run transfer stations for self-haul. Scheduled curbside appliance collection instead carries a $50 fee arranged through 3-1-1. The Southside Transfer Station also takes glass bottles, cardboard, aluminum cans, and newspapers, plus tires without rims at a limit of four.

Richmond Recycling Tips

  • •Keep recyclables loose in the container, because CVWMA does not accept bagged material.
  • •Rinse containers so they are clean and free of food waste.
  • •Take shredded paper to a shredding event rather than putting it in the recycling container.
  • •Put your supercan out after 4 p.m. the day before and pull it in by 7 a.m. the day after.
  • •Self-haul appliances to East Richmond Road or Southside Transfer Station to skip the $50 collection fee.
