Alpha Ridge Landfill opened in 1980 on a 550 acre site at 2350 Marriottsville Road, and its Residents' Convenience Center is Howard County's drop-off for residents. Howard County residents bring small quantities of household trash and unlimited recyclables, with proof of county residency required. The center is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and takes single stream recycling plus mattresses, electronics, and scrap metal. The campus also holds a transfer station, a wood waste area for yard trim, a residential hazardous waste drop-off for paint and batteries, and an industrial composting facility. Anyone arriving with a dump truck, box truck, trailer, or rental vehicle counts as commercial and crosses the scales first. The landfill accepts Howard County waste only.
