Recycling in Fort Myers, Florida

Fort Myers residents get weekly curbside pickup with a 96 gallon trash cart and a 65 gallon recycling cart, both serviced once a week by the city's Public Works Solid Waste Division. Recycling and trash go out on the same collection day, and carts need to be curbside by 6:30 a.m. Chemicals and electronics are not part of city service: those go to Lee County's Household Chemical Waste and Electronics Recycling Facility on Topaz Court instead. The county also runs the Buckingham Resource Recovery Facility, a waste-to-energy plant that has been converting Lee County's trash into electricity since 1994.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Fort Myers curbside recycling accept glass?

Yes. Lee County's curbside recycling program, which covers Fort Myers, accepts green, brown and clear glass bottles and jars in the same 65 gallon cart as everything else. Glass vases, dishes, lightbulbs, windows and mirrors are not accepted curbside because they are a different type of glass and can contaminate the load. Rinse bottles and jars before tossing them in; you do not need to remove labels.

What can I put in my Fort Myers recycling cart?

The county's curbside program is built around five material categories: paper (newspapers, magazines, junk mail, catalogs, phone books, copy paper), metal cans (clean steel, tin and aluminum, no need to remove labels or crush them), cardboard (flattened boxes, pizza box lids if not greasy), plastic containers numbered 1 through 7, and glass bottles and jars. Plastic bags, bubble wrap, Styrofoam, hardcover books, foil, and scrap metal or metal furniture do not belong in the cart.

What happens to Fort Myers trash after it's collected?

Most residential garbage in Lee County goes to the Buckingham Resource Recovery Facility, a waste-to-energy plant that has run 24/7 since 1994. It burns roughly 1,836 tons of solid waste a day and generates up to 60 megawatts of power, with about 45 megawatts sold back to the grid, all under continuously monitored air pollution controls. Recyclables collected curbside are routed separately to the county's Material Recovery Facility for sorting.

Where do I take household chemicals, electronics, or hazardous waste in Fort Myers?

The City of Fort Myers does not collect household chemicals or electronics with regular trash or recycling pickup. Residents take those items free of charge to Lee County's Household Chemical Waste and Electronics Recycling Facility at 6441 Topaz Court in Fort Myers, or call Lee County Solid Waste at (239) 533-8000 for guidance. Businesses that are very small quantity generators can use separate scheduled Business Collection Days instead.

How does Fort Myers handle bulky items, yard waste, and hurricane debris?

The city provides bulk item pickup once a week (up to 4 cubic yards of furniture, mattresses, and similar large household items), yard waste pickup once a week (up to 10 cubic yards of trimmings), and white goods removal for appliances like stoves, refrigerators, and washers or dryers, with junk and brush required to be kept separate. Residents can also rent a 96 gallon horticulture cart for $2.75 a month for ongoing yard trimmings. After major storms like Hurricane Ian, Lee County brings in contracted haulers for a separate, extended storm debris collection effort on top of normal weekly service, and residents are asked to stack debris by category (vegetative, construction, appliances, household) at the curb for faster pickup.

Fort Myers Recycling Tips

  • •Rinse glass bottles and jars before putting them in the recycling cart. Broken or contaminated glass gets pulled out at the Material Recovery Facility anyway, so a quick rinse keeps the load usable.
  • •Never bag your recyclables in plastic bags. Lee County says loose plastic bags and film jam the sorting equipment at the Material Recovery Facility, and cleanup from contamination costs the county an estimated $25,000 to $30,000 a month.
  • •Put trash and recycling carts out the night before collection if you can, since carts must be at the curb no later than 6:30 a.m. on your scheduled day, and keep them at least 5 feet from vehicles or other obstructions or they may be skipped.
  • •Batteries, paint, pesticides, and old electronics do not go in the city cart at all. Drive them to the Lee County Household Chemical Waste and Electronics Recycling Facility at 6441 Topaz Court, which takes them free of charge.
  • •Florida has no bottle deposit law, so there is no cash-back redemption for cans or bottles here. If you separate scrap metal like appliances or aluminum for cash, take it to a private scrap yard rather than the curbside cart, since white goods need to go out separately from regular bulk pickup anyway.
