Frequently asked questions
What yard waste and clean fill materials are accepted?
Green/yard waste is accepted, with branches no longer than 5 feet and under 5 inches in diameter, and palm trees and yucca cut to 2-foot lengths. Clean fill accepted includes concrete, asphalt, bricks, rocks, and dirt. Clean fill and yard waste cannot be mixed, and loads must be free of trash and other contaminants.
Is there a fee to drop off?
Drop-off is free for Las Cruces and Dona Ana County residents. Commercial customers pay the current per-ton rate and must pay by cash or check at the time of transaction, or set up an approved billing account.
What are the drop-off hours?
At the Sonoma Ranch Recycling Drop Off Center (555 S. Sonoma Ranch Blvd), hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (last load 3:45 p.m.) and Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (last load 2:45 p.m.). It is closed Sunday.
What happens to the yard waste collected?
Las Cruces Utilities recycles all yard waste into composted mulch. It is chipped, ground, piled, watered, and turned over several months to make mulch useful for landscaping, dust abatement, and erosion control. The finished compost is available free to residents while supplies last.

I have never taken green waste here but get the compost the offer in the spring. It's not the best but it's free. It does have a lot of larger sticks pine cones rocks and small bits of plastic or trash in it but just sort through it before you put it in your garden or landscaping. The employees have always been very polite the past five years I have been going.

The place is very functional and well kept. I have been pruning the many trees on my property and hauling the limbs here for the last few Saturdays. The employees at the gate has always waved me through however this trip the employee (different individual) stopped me and gave me a hard time for not checking in and knowing the rules even though there doesn’t seem to be any clearly stated way in which things work as far as “checking in.” The process should always be the same for every day and every employee.Trying to make a customer feel stupid for the loose procedures the business has and confusion it causes doesn’t really make sense.
