3 Rivers Iron & Metal buys ferrous and non-ferrous scrap at its Fairmont yard on Virginia Avenue, one of five West Virginia yards alongside Elkins, Moorefield, Mineral Wells, and Charleston. Since April 2024 cars no longer drive in for scrap; they arrive on a trailer with the gas tank removed or cut in half and placed inside, and electric and hybrid vehicles are refused. Lead-acid batteries are bought whole with caps in place, while lithium-ion and electric vehicle batteries are not.
Steel is graded as prepared number one, plate and structural, unprepared mixed, clean auto cast, and shredder. The yard also buys insulated and bare copper, aluminum, brass, bronze, lead, catalytic converters, and radiators. Large items get cut on site, and businesses rent 20, 30, and 40 yard roll-off containers. Customers come from three states.

Only cars delivered by trailer. Since April 2024 the yard no longer buys vehicles driven in, and the gas tank must be removed or cut in half and placed inside the vehicle.
