Grand Island's household hazardous waste drop-off belongs to a local Keep America Beautiful and Keep Nebraska Beautiful affiliate, funded by donations, state grants, and support from the City of Grand Island and Hall, Hamilton, Howard, and Merrick Counties. The facility takes products labeled poison, flammable, corrosive, irritant, or oxidizer, including paint, antifreeze, motor oil, aerosol cans, pesticides, fluorescent bulbs, and gasoline. Everything arrives in its original container, and mercury items require a call first. A free Swap Shop at the same site takes used products for drop-off or pick-up. The facility refuses large appliances, propane tanks, and commercial, industrial, medical, or agricultural waste, and it charges a per-set fee for flat panel TVs with a two-per-day limit per residence. Hours run Monday through Friday, and the facility is closed Saturdays.

Scrap Central moved to its 7-acre, all-concrete yard on North 85th Street in 2014 and weighs loads on a certified 90,000-pound truck scale and 5,000-pound platform scales. The second-generation family company, established in 2001, buys all grades of metal from industrial steel to non-ferrous, and a wire processing division launched in 2016 handles insulated copper wire. Digital scale readouts and transparent grading back a target of in-and-out visits in 20 minutes or less. Roll-offs, trailers, and luggers go out to manufacturing, construction, and demolition projects, with same-day container service and a 5,000-pound minimum for steel. Electronic recycling is also offered. Hours run Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
