Cardboard Recycling in Chicago: FAQ

Where can I drop off a lot of cardboard in Chicago, IL?

Municipal drop-off sites and transfer stations usually take flattened boxes free. For large commercial volumes, a recycler may provide a baler or container and sometimes pays for clean bales.

Does cardboard need to be clean?

Flatten boxes and remove packing foam and plastic. Normal tape and labels are fine, and a little grease on a pizza box is accepted by most programs. Wet or soaked cardboard is not.

Do recyclers pay for cardboard?

Only in bulk. Baled, clean corrugated cardboard is a commodity, but household quantities are not worth paying for.
