Brothers Melvin Hugh Madewell and Billy J. Madewell opened this Jones, Oklahoma battery plant as a partnership in 1953. Carmalieta Wells started there in 1973 while a junior at Jones High School, became president in 2004, and that year bought the company with classmate Bill Dean. The two still run it. The yard at 9400 N Choctaw Road covers more than 100 acres, about 7.8 miles north of Interstate 40, 10 miles east of Interstate 35, and 3.5 miles west of the Kickapoo Turnpike. Spent lead-acid batteries from automobiles, forklifts, and industrial equipment arrive in truckloads of 43,000 pounds and up. Smaller loads are accepted when the seller arranges delivery. Every part of the batteries received is recycled into reusable products. The plant buys from large national retailers and also processes batteries for recyclers and large battery producers.
