Elgin Township collects dry-cell batteries at its Highway Garage on South McLean Boulevard, one of four township drop-off points in the battery recycling program. The other three sit at the Pingree Grove, Big Timber, and South Elgin fire district stations. The program has collected more than 320,000 pounds of batteries from township residents. The bin takes AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt, hearing aid, and computer batteries, plus cells from radios, flashlights, toys, power tools, cameras, and cell phones. Batteries go in loose, with no bags or containers, and every lithium battery and every battery with top terminals needs clear tape over the terminals. Car, boat, and motorcycle wet-cell batteries are refused.

Most scrap yards buy lead-acid car batteries by the pound or per battery. Auto parts stores usually take them free and may refund a core charge.
Tape the terminals of lithium and 9-volt batteries or bag each one separately. Loose lithium batteries can short and start fires in bins and trucks.
Alkaline batteries are legal to trash in most states, but rechargeable and lithium batteries are not. Recycling all of them is the safe choice.
