Indian River County Main Landfill, operated by the County Solid Waste Disposal District. Open seven days, 7 a.m.–5 p.m.; closed New Year’s Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Tipping fees apply. The County distinguishes this landfill from its residential convenience centers, where additional recycling and household hazardous waste drop-offs are accepted; do not assume those convenience-center materials are accepted at the landfill.

Indian River County operates a landfill and five Customer Convenience Centers for residents across the county, including locations in Vero Beach, Roseland, and Fellsmere. The convenience centers accept curbside recyclables plus items not allowed in the blue cart, including household hazardous waste (lithium-ion batteries, fluorescent bulbs, motor oil, paint, mercury items, and medical sharps), white Styrofoam, plastic bags and wrap, scrap metal, electronics, tires, and small yard waste. Centers are open 7:00 am to 6:00 pm and are closed Wednesdays (with an additional weekday closure that varies by location) and on major holidays; they are for residential use only. Construction and demolition debris, large branches, and land clearing debris must go directly to the sanitary landfill, where tipping fees apply.

Most transfer stations and convenience centers take household garbage and bulky items, but some serve only commercial haulers and county sites may ask for proof of residency. Check the listing or call before you go.
Fees are usually charged by weight or by load, with surcharges for tires, mattresses, appliances, and construction debris. Some county convenience centers are free for residents because local taxes fund them.
A transfer station is a collection point: waste is unloaded, consolidated, and trucked to a landfill or processing plant. A landfill is the final disposal site. Convenience centers are small residential drop-off sites, often run by the county.
