Yogurt container recycling depends heavily on your local program capabilities and the specific type of container. First, check the recycling number on the bottom of the container – #5 (PP) containers are most likely to be accepted, while #6 (PS) containers are rarely accepted in curbside programs. Empty the container completely and scrape out all yogurt residue with a spoon or spatula. Rinse thoroughly with warm water to remove all traces of yogurt, especially flavored varieties that can leave sticky residue. Remove and dispose of foil lids in regular trash as these mixed-material lids cannot be recycled. If your container has a plastic lid, check if it's the same plastic type as the container – if so, it may be recyclable, but if different, dispose separately. For polystyrene containers (#6), look for specialized drop-off programs at some grocery stores or foam recycling events, but don't put them in curbside recycling. Large yogurt containers (like family-size or Greek yogurt tubs) are more likely to be accepted than small single-serve cups. When in doubt, check your local recycling program's website or contact them directly, as yogurt container acceptance varies significantly between communities.
